Type Locality Serra do Roncador, kilometer 125 of the road Chavantina-Casximba, Mato Grosso State, Brazil.

Etymology Aspidoras: From the Greek aspis, meaning shield and doras, meaning skin; in reference to the bony plates. This specific epithet refers to the specimen's tawny or dusky (brunneus = dusky, dark or tawny) colour.
