Type Locality Lake Titicaca, affluent of Apurimac, Guasacona, Peru.

Etymology Trichomycterus: From the Greek trichos, meaning hair and mykter, meaning nose; in reference to the barbels.

Distribution South America: High-altitude lakes and streams in the central Andean range (including Lakes Titicaca and Poopó), from Lake Junin in the north to Chilean region of Tarapacá in the south, spanning western Bolivia, Peru and northern Chile.

Feeding This genus takes live or frozen food is well accepted, as is commerical dry prepared foods. Be careful not to overfeed. In nature, they feed on small invertebrates living at the bottom.
