Identification | The genus Panaque is identified by the teeth, which are spoon-shaped. This means that the teeth are noticeably wider at the tip than at the base. Other loricariidae have teeth that are similar width all the way from one end to the other. A second distinguishing feature is the lack of a buccal papilla, which is a "flap of skin" on the inside of the mouth. See pictures in this PDF on Pterygoplichthys. Time will tell if this is a species of a particular geographic form, for now we keep it separate because it differs from all other Brazilian royal plecos by having spots in caudal fin, sometimes in the dorsal fin too but not always. The amount of spots varies a little but never do they have a solid colour caudal fin. |
Sexing | One of the larger 22-25cm individuals shows is higher bodied than others of the same size. Perhaps this indicates sexual dimorphism as the two body shapes are found together in the same area of the river. |
