Scientific Name | Panaque sp. (LDA106) |
Common Names | LDA106, Golden Royal Pleco Xingu Golden Thunder Pleco, Xingu Longnose Royal Pleco |
Pronunciation | pan ah KAY. |
Etymology | The generic epithet "panaque" is a Venezuelan common name for this fish. |
Species Information | |
Identification | The genus Panaque is identified by the teeth, which are spoon-shaped. This means that the teeth are noticeably wider at the tip than at the base. Other loricariidae have teeth that are similar width all the way from one end to the other. A second distinguishing feature is the lack of a buccal papilla, which is a "flap of skin" on the inside of the mouth. See pictures in this PDF on Pterygoplichthys. The fish are strikingly yellow/golden in colour, which is particularly evident in the suckermouth. In addition, they are flatter, more "aerodynamic" with a lower dorsal than the P. armbrusteri forms. In adults, the caudal fin is spotted (versus striped). Aside from being generally yellowish, juveniles are easier to tell apart due to the caudal fin pattern which is 2/3 black with yellow fin rays and a distinct black bar at the caudal peduncle. |
