Etymology | Parotocinclus: Greek, para in the side of + greek, ous, otis = ear + Greek, kygklos, ou = a fish. The specific name derives from the word ‘pukuixê’, from the Pataxó language used by the native Pataxohã Indigenous tribe. The Pataxó tribe historically occupies the south and extreme south coastal areas of Bahia State. Pukuixê means "the first" and alludes to the species being the first of the genus having the rio Pardo as its type locality. |
