Type Locality Río Napo at Añangu, Napo Prov, 0°30.8'S, 76°24.0'W, Ecuador.
Etymology Ernstichthys: Named after A Ernst, who established the chair of Natural History in the Universidade Central de Venezuela. The specific epithet, intonsus, is from the Latin intonsus, unshaved or bearded, in reference to the extreme proliferation of barbels.
