Pronunciation sarw oo bim
Etymology Sorubi is the Brazilian local name for this fish (and several other pimelodids), latinised to become Sorubim. This specific epithet literally means many (multi=many, multiple) rakers (radii=rakers) and refers to the high concentration of gill rakers found in this species.

Identification No other pimelodid genus possesses a dark horizontal stripe stretching entire length of head and body.

Distribution South America: tributaries of the upper and middle Amazon Basin (Ríos Napo, Marañon, Ucayali, Mamore, Madeira, Javari). Probably occurring in the Colombian tributaries of the Amazon.
