Etymology | Sorubi is the Brazilian local name for this fish (and several other pimelodids), latinised to become Sorubim. This specific epithet refers to its triangular-shaped (trigono=three-sided) head (cephalus=head). |

Identification | No other pimelodid genus possesses a dark horizontal stripe stretching entire length of head and body. |
General Remarks | Sorubim trigonocephalus was described in 1920 by Alípio de Miranda Ribeiro, based on a single specimen collected in a locality identified as “Porto Velho”. However, in their 2016 paper, O'Hara & Neuhaus correct a nearly century old confusion and determine the type locality of this species in the Arinos River in the Tapajós basin and extend it's range to include the Xingu. |
