Re: CW21 VS. C. Axelrodi ??
I'm only going on what people have told me (therefore may just be repeating misinformation), but I'd thought that CW021 had near-parallel black lines, whereas in axelrodi the lines converge (as can be seen in the bottom line in Frank's photo of an adult fish).

Re: ID this interesting looking panaque
I'm assuming (but don't know) this fish is a recent import, so I'd say it's unlikely (it's entirely possible the fish was a trade-in, but I'd have thought this was less likely).Bas Pels wrote:From the picture I get the idea the Panaque is not housed properly. Re: Bushy nose pl*co
I'm unfamiliar with American tank dimensions, so I don't know what footprint a 40g breeder has. My 36 UK gallon tank has a footprint of 4' X 1' and has 3 males and a female in it (not the sex ratio I aimed for!) and they're fine- the males even tolerate each other feeding on the same piece of courge...

Re: Experts, What's the name of this cory? Please help
I'm hopeless on elegans-complex corys- I think Mats is right in that it's a species similar to elegans, but there are so many similar-looking species in this complex that you really need someone like Ian Fuller (Coryman) to give an ID.

Re: ID this interesting looking panaque
I'm not prone to sticking my neck out on here, but I'd say this is a new species. the elongated mouth doesn't look like a deformity, to me. I'm not sure one way or the other on head shape- it is markedly different in shape from any of the nigrolineatus -type Panaque - the snout and mouth seem very ...

Re: Albino Bristlenose Pleco deaths
I believe you should still feed a variety of fresh greens. I'll agree with this- I'm a bit lazy and tend to just feed courgette and cucumber (in addition to algae wafers/spirulina granules and flake, very occasional catfish pellets and frozen bloodworm), but if they're fed a variety of vegetable fo...

Re: what am I?
Yes, but HAVING kept a fish doesn't mean it's necessarily on the My Cats - and the experience may still count... true- I've got a few from the distant past (1980s) I never added due to not being sure of dates, but anything recent would be there even if I killed them off (under "kept" rath...

Re: what am I?
Who said it was on Richard's my cat list? noone did, but I can't think of another way to guess otherwise! I'd thought that, to do a CotM article, it should be a species someone has kept, preferably reasonably successfully... Plus I've gone through all the African families I can think of and nothing...

Re: what am I?
I think Jools has ruled out SA fish on this- so I'm assuming that it's an African fish we're looking for, but the only one that's left that Richard's got on his "My Cats" list that hasn't already been a CotM is Lophiobagrus cyclurus, which I can't get to fit the clue.

Re: what am I?
"Pseudonem" sounds a bit like a pseudonym, which, stretching it a bit, could be conceited. It's a fish Richard's got in his "My Cats" page, and the clue didn't specify a continent as far as I can see.

Re: The PlanetCatfish coolwall thread
Verging on cool but not extremely cool for me- most definitely not subzero. Nice that it's distinctive (if a little odd-looking- certainly wouldn't win any beauty contests), and non-predatory compared with others cats its size, but a bit on the timid side for a mid-sized cat. It looks a bit too much...

Re: plecos vs. acrylic
My oldest tank is just over 30 years old (although it wasn't running for 17 of those) and definitely not mint- it's got scratches on the outside from transferring it from Sheffield to Bristol, back to Sheffield, up to the loft, down from the loft, and from Sheffield to Aughton- it's not suffered scr...

Re: Keeping 2 sailfin's together?
300 litres sounds too small to me long-term- my tank is 675 litres and I'd say that's a bit small for my sailfin (I bought the fish before checking the internet- none of my 1980s books suggested that they grow to 2 feet long). Older sailfin and common plecos have a slight reputation for being aggres...

Re: How long quarrantine plecos; prophalyctic drug treatment?
I agree it's a big difference between collecting fish yourself and getting them through a long chain of suppliers. And of course, if you drive for a couple of hours, catch some fish, take them home and put them in a tank, they are (probably) a lot less stressed than fish that has been flying halfwa...

Re: plecos vs. acrylic
Pleco and acrylic eventually equals a tank thrown in the trash unless you are keeping something like Otocinclus , or as NX7 suggested, reophilic loricariinae.. From this, I'm assuming that even non-toothed plecos such as Pterygoplichthys and Ancistrus do enough cosmetic damage over time to ruin acr...

Re: J & T industry canister filter and pump
If sunlight is a problem, perhaps replacing the rather see-through hose with one that is either darker grey/brown or, like Eheim, green? That's a reasonable suggestion- definitely worth me keeping an eye out for suitable opaque hosing. I don't actually mind (too much) that section clogging up, beca...

Re: A very old Pterygoplichthys pardalis I think..
There is extremely little data on lifespan of wild fishes in general. I would say that they are more likely to live long in captivity than in the wild. I remember seeing a website with oldest recorded fish ages for different species in captivity (in some cases unsubstantiated), but annoyingly I can...

Re: J & T industry canister filter and pump
I have not had any TetraTec Internal filters, so I can't comment on them, but I have two EX1200 and one EX700 - and they work really well. Sure after several months of neglect, they tend to be a bit mucky inside, but flow is still good in my experience. Perhaps it depends on what fish and/or food i...

Re: J & T industry canister filter and pump
I'd be a bit wary of comparing flow rates between companies- for example I've the misfortune to have four Tetratec filters (EX700, EX1200, IN800 and IN1000) and I don't think the flow rate is 10% of what's claimed after a few months' worth of running (the two internal filters are particularly dreadf...

Re: Bolton Aquarium visit
My local club had a tour of the back rooms of Bolton Aquarium a couple of years ago (September '07) with Paul Dixon- very interesting; for a public aquarium I was impressed with their breeding/raising tanks for a large range of fish. The baby C112s and C113s looked stunning, plus I came home with 5 ...
