How big is the tank?

Ancistrus spp are the best algae eaters IMHO. But otos are very good as well.

If not i would start looking in the cat-elog under the name farlowella, because there are a few different species that match your description.

do you have problems with it breaking free and floating round the tank? On the whole no. When you first emerce the plant under water the lose pieces float away, but you can just catch them in a net and tie them to the next piece you do, or leave it floating to grow on before you put in under water....

I've got the ricca growing at the moment it's just tied to rocks and wood and i've always thought it gives more of a moss impression than lawn. But on the plus side is simple to grow major benefits come from using CO2.

Has there Taxonomy changed? Or are they just not in the Elog?
Have to ask HH about the taxonomy, but most likely reason they are missing from the cat-elog is that these species are extreemly rare.

I have just set a 90 Gallon tropical freshwater tank. I currently have 6 discus, 2 Golden Bristlenose, 1 Butterfly plec and 1 unknown plec (on what is my catfish site).
How long has the tank been set up? what temperature and pH are you running the tank at? this just helps with selection.

Do you have very bright light and undersoil fertiliser or CO2 injection?

The carpet plants are the most difficult to grow IME.

Lilaeopsis brasiliensis would give the ideal look of grass but I wouldn't buy many to start with.

When I bought my filter I was told that I should only clean it out once a month or so. They said that doing it more than this would kill all the bacteria in the filter and would be detrimental to the haelth of my tank/fish. Given that it's a fluval 404 external and is the right size for the tank it...

Also what is roughly the life span on a typical catfish?
Life span is individual to each species. So i can't really give an average. However I can't think of a catfish that lives less than 5 years.

I thought moving them to another tank was the worst solution because of the different waterparameters. 'They' said to me young ancistrus couldn't handle such differences very well. Should have made myself clearer, I mean take the water out of the main tank to fill the new tank a 18x10x10 would be f...

yep it's a chaetostoma sp.

Looking at aqualog L188a is the closest But not perfect. Might be one for the cat-elog Jools?

Have a look in the cat-elog for general care for bull dog species as it's slightly different to ancistrus.

My catfish are identical to the top picture.
Good, had to be sure.
I keep them at 78-80 degrees.. is this too cold? too warm?
They can be kept from 75-82 degrees, so you are on the upper end of the scale.

Is this mouth rot ? mouth rot is normaly reference to Flexibacter bacterium. which it could bethe start of, but it's unlikely. IMO your Ancistrus (looks more like a Chaetostoma ) has contracted a bacteria infection of some form. Best response quarantine and start a course of myxazin on 12 hour cycl...
