Re: Best gravel for catfish?

In the first few years I kept fish I was learning constantly. I did not want nor use sand for another dozen years. My third tank was a high tech, co2 added planted one. I used a small size coated gravel, Estes Bits O Walnut. I do not know if it is still available. This link indicates it is, but you ...

Re: Issues with supplier

This outfit appears to have had a decent reputation in the past. However, they are also a brick and mortar business with employees. It may be that the year of Covid cost that part of the business a lot and they were not able to make things up just online. They may be in bad financial shape and be un...

Re: Should I just go with no substrate?

The first serious pleco spawning for me began in Apr. 2006 with H. zebra. I used a bare bottom tank. However, I had a tom of rock and wood as well as many caves. Because the fish were very kind to me and spawned a lot, I began to have an ever increasing number of offspring in the tank. I am a believ...

Re: Sturisomatichthys aureus (royal farlowella) spawning/raising help

I was ignorant when I got mine. I never expected spawning. I did it all wrong initially. But the hardest part was rasing the fry after birth. They are the hardest fry to raise I have had to date. The dad will also mouth the eggs to keep them clean: https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-M4295qB/0/4c888...

Re: Super White 236 spawn

I basically work with the B&W Hypans from the Rio Xingu. I have also worked with L450, H. contradens an P. compta. I basically fed them all the same diet. My foods fall into three groups: Frozen, Repashy and Commercial (sinking sticks). I try to feed the least Commercial. For Repashy I mostly us...

Re: Altum angels biotope aquarium - which corys?

@Mataj I am very jealous. Every time I watch the vid I linked it brings a tear to my eye as the fish are so dang pretty it just makes one cry. I would love to get some of Simon's fish. They are so much easier to take care of than wild imports and so much more beautiful as well. And I got the species...

Re: Altum angels biotope aquarium - which corys?

What corys might work depends upon the source of your Altums. If you are buying recently imported fish from the wild, you will need to have a lower pH and TDS. If you are buying tank bred fish (harder to find), make sure you confirm the needed pH and TDS levels for them. Simon Forkel out of Germany ...

Re: Sturisomatichthys aureus (royal farlowella) spawning/raising help

I only kept one farlo species which spawned for me a few times in a community tank. Up until that point my experience with fry was mostly with corys and plecos. I expected to see wigglers and the farlos I had did not work that way. The fry developed inside the egg and broke out to hatch. I also expe...

Re: Best way to grow out fry

I do not agree with your thinking about too much meaty food. However, I also believe that, when young, the fry need more veggies type food in their diet. I also believe in leaving fry in breeding tanks initially as I know they grow faster this way. Of course one must pay attention to the over crowdi...

Re: Super White 236 spawn

I cannot stress enough the importance of visiting every tank every day. Even if all one does is stick a hand into the water and look into the tank for anything not quite right, that is often enough to head off or catch problems before they do damage. Air hoses become detached from sponges etc. Thing...

Re: Super White 236 spawn

I did not feed tanks on Sunday except for fry. Yesterday evening I was feeding Repashy to all tanks with bottom dwellers. When I do this I cut smaller pieces and spread them around the tank using a long tweezers. I am trying to spread the food around and put it where current won't move it. This mean...

Re: Xingu Big Bend Temps and the Dam

Given what Leandro said in his vid about how zebra populations were still viable but the loss of a very minimal amount of individuals could crash the entire population, it would appear that there is little chance for the species to survive. The population data is towards the end of the video. UIVfT5...

Xingu Big Bend Temps and the Dam

The most recent news I have read concerning the operation of the Belo Monte dam is that authorization has been given to lover water levels by another 15% below the lowest they were formally allowed to reach. Water temperatures could get pretty warm in the Big Bend compared to the times prior to the ...

Re: Super White 236 spawn

TY gents. This was the last new "species" I could acquire. I have neither the space, the energy or the time to maintain my current level of tanks. But I wanted to do these guys because they look so nice even if they may not ever be a described species. Also, 236 spawn the soonest, size and...

Super White 236 spawn

I have wigglers in a cave. It is possible there is another dad on eggs but I could not see clearly into his cave. I got my group about 18 months ago. As far as I know, my fish are from the Budrovcan line of super whites. At this time all 7 of my hypancistrus groups are actively spawning- 2 each of 1...

Re: Conservation and trade of Hypancistrus zebra

Nice paper. Much of this was in Leandro's vid on Youtube from last July. What is not in the above paper were the simulations he and his team ran on zebra populations and what numbers were needed for it to survive in the wild. If I recall the number right, they felt that about 10,000 individuals were...

Impossible to make a post that tates time

Is there a way to fix the below? A few days ago this happened to me once again on this site. I was putting together a longish post which contained links and quotes. I worked on it for some time. Then I hit enter and got the screen telling me I was no longer logged on and had to be for that action. T...

Re: L46 breeding corydoras pantanalensis

My experience with spawning the B&W Hypans is that once they begin to spawn, they usually continue doing so for many months. Then they will pause for a bit and then they restart. However, this is not universally the case. Sometimes one just gets an occasional spawn. If spawning is a primary goal...
