Re: L236 sexes? What do you think?

The smaller fish isn't showing any odontile growth I can see along the body of the fish. So it may be female. You can see this on the larger fish, however. I know with zebras one may often see a black dot right below where the tube comes out. You can see this on the bigger one that looks to be a mal...

Re: 236 SW

Why would you want to do this? Breeders have to do a lot of work using selective breeding over multiple generations to create a super white line where this trait is fairly fixed. If you breed a super white with a regular 236 all you are doing is going in the opposite direction. Therefore, it is impo...

Re: Breeding L397 babies mixed with subadults

I never remove eggs nor wigglers from tanks. The only time I pull free swimming fry is when there are way too many in the breeder tank or if they are large enough to be sellable.

My way is not the only way but it has worked for me for many years. But I am a hobby breeder not a business.

Re: L397 Plecos Lacey Act

Amendments to the Lacey Act included in the COMPETES Act of 2022 (H.R.4521) legislation would make changes to the Lacey Act that would negatively impact the broader pet care community. This passed the House in Feb. But, The COMPETES Act is now in the Senate after passing the House on February 4, 20...

Re: ancistrus fry predator

1 day old wigglers are not much bigger than an egg. Almost anything that can will eat them. Decades ago I got some of the earlier LF BN that were coming to America. I bought a small group. At that time I had little interest in spawning anything. it turned out they were spawning once old enough. But ...

Re: Heater for pricy plecos

After several back and forth emails with Inkbird I am returning both units. I got them for about $28 each with a 10% off coupon and free shipping. I am going to buy a couple more of the Azoo Micro Controllers which will cost me $52 each plus shipping. In the end I will pay about twice as much to get...

Re: Heater for pricy plecos

I do not own nor use a smart phone. I have a flip phone I use for voice calls and which is turned off over 95% of the time. So that options is not possible nor would it be desired. I do not need to get a call that my fish are being boiled alive, I need a controller to prevent that. Part of my dislik...

Re: Heater for pricy plecos

I just wanted to update things. I needed a total of 4 but did not want to buy 4 without trying at least one. Plus I only needed two really soon and the others could wait a bit. So i went back and forth in the cart on Amazon as I assembled an order. My head said just get one but my heart said 2 as I ...

Re: Sick zebra pleco

When you say the stringy poop has disappeared do you mean it's poop returned to normal looking or that the fish is not pooping at all. Two observations here- if the wasting fish has stopped pooping and eating, this is not good. There are stronger meds, but I am not sure if the fish can handle them e...

Are you sure got the named spelled right? Ugh and Ugg are way different in what they mean. And if they mean short for Ugly then wouldn't that be Ug. :-\

Re: My Public Aquarium: exhibit blues - how to make them?

It could be Flubendazole is banned for use in food fish, But as far as I know it is OK for ornamentals. A fast search found it on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Plymouth-Discus-Product-WORMER-Plus/dp/B085TQ75Z5?th=1 Dr. Harrison has been selling it for years and still does. If it had become illegal, ...

Re: My Public Aquarium: exhibit blues - how to make them?

Viktor- I am not the best at disease diagnosis. I have dealt with columnaris successfully, for the most part, over the years. However, when it comes to wasting and ultimately not eating there is another option to consider besides bacteria. You may already be aware of this, but I figured it was worth...

@Captainandy Bit there is not a near limitless supply of marijuana any more than there is a limitless supply of corn or rice or almost anything else. Until marijuana is legalized all over the world, a lot of it never makes it being sold. @Janne We can discuss all the regulations, processes etc. invo...

Re: Brazil wishlist

I would state the opposite, the more species that legally can be exported as ornamental fish will decrease the risk of extinction I do not agree with this. Consider the case of the recent trend in my country to legalize marijuana for recreational use. One would think that this would put a cramp int...

Re: Brazil wishlist

I just want to be sure I am understanding the situation clearly. First, am I correct in understanding that it is now legal to export any fish from Brazil that is not on the list to which Jools linked above. Second, if the answer to the above is yes, does this also mean all of the L numbers which hav...

Re: Heater for pricy plecos

If you hook heaters from two different tanks to the same controller but only have a single temp. probe, whichever tank the probe goes into will determine when the heaters in both tanks can or cannot turn on regardless of the temp. in the tank without the probe. If a heater in that tank get stuck ful...

Re: Heater for pricy plecos

I pretty much use two heaters on almost every tank I have. The exception is smaller tanks 15 gal or less. I cannot fit 2 heaters. Also, on tanks with canister filters i use inline heaters. However, my 150 also has a second in tank heater as well as two hang-on in addition to the canister. That said,...

Re: Heater for pricy plecos

I also use controllers on my tanks with the most valuable fish. I use the Azoo Mini controller good for up to about 900w of heating. My first ones cost me about $22 each, My next 5 were half that on clearance when Live Aquaria bought FosterSmith. Since then they got hard to find and the last 4 cost ...

Re: How many of you leave fry with daddy?

I have no issues with dad raising fish from spawning to free swimming. When I began with spawning zebras in 2006 I had two males that did all the spawning and an uncertain number of females involved. The two males spawned about every 30 days. However, the spawns were about two weeks apart for the tw...
