Growth rate of Marble Pim

I was just in one of the local stores and they have a 8-10 inch marbled pim in an approx.200-300 gallon wooden frame pond with pond filter and I last saw it 8 months ago and it looks like it has barely grown, is this typical for the species. I know others like the RTC and the TSN that I have had gre...

Yeah that has been in the back of my mind as well, they have a really nice one about 14" at the LFS but I get confllicting reports about the size that they grow, def seems like a slower grower than some of the others, I think if I go with the larger size tank this could work, let me know guys i...

Thanks Mat. Yeah I was thinking about that option, seems somewhat possible or maybe the slightly bigger Brachyplatystoma juruense but I've never seen these in any of my LFSs but with some good flow rate and the right tank dimentions maybe.

Need help selecting some med. size cats

Hey guys got a question. After several attempts at an outdoor pond (I live in South Florida) I've settled on the fact that a tank around 180-210 gallons might be a better option. I really enjoy raising some of the bigger cats, RTC and TSN but by no means do I want to subject one to long term confinm...

Thanks for the great ideas everyone and I actually started building the structure with the same wood that this guy used. But all the ideas about the slate and coverings for winter will be put to good use. Ill throw some pics up when I get a chance. I'll put up some preliminary pics up and if you hav...

As far as their closer relatives go they are the most adaptable to the community tank so long as other fish are not small enough to easily fit in their mouth they can be kept with many other species. A good fish to have if your staying with 100 gallons, some of the others you mentioned require a gre...

Growth rate of larger plecos?

Hey I was wondering if anybody knew the growth rate of some of the larger plecos because I want to put some in a pond with other catfish that get big. I can purchase larger ones easily and fairly inexpensive but the joy for me is in watching them grow. I don't want them to be outgrown and eaten by o...

Thanks for the reminder. I think like 1000 gallons with a constant flow should be good enough to stay in that range and for the few weeks in winter when it gets cold I can get a pond heater. Your right about getting out though netting is a must, lots of birds of prey in the area that like fish. Than...

Brachyplatystoma juruense is a great looking fish. Is it true that is pnly gets about 2 feet. I've never seen them for sale at the local shops that sell RTC and Tiger Shovelnose. Are they excessively rare? Wonderful pictures by the way and great tank. I like the black sand as well, nice touch.

Pond for Pims

I have a question for everyone so any input would be great. I've been living in Miami and finally own a place to put an outdoor pond, about 1000 gallons. I wanna build the structure from landscaping wood which many people have done and want to know if anybody has good resources or info about keeping...

Hey good point Racoll I forgot about the PH factor. It was along time ago but I do remember the PH being very out of wack as well. Many people state the the RTC is sensiteve to water quality but I think as they get older they get a litte more hardy. I have a question for everyone so any input would ...

Please DO Not do a big water change. I can't believe people are suggesting this. More than anything and the reason these fish shed mucus is because of water quality. They are very sensity to change and I like you was given one of these fish years ago and killed it by changing half the water. I recco...

I'd avoid live feeder they tend to create problems of the toxic sort. In the wild crustaceans and fruits, as previously mentioned, are a large part of the natural diet. Since water quality is an issue for this fish the more water in the system the better which makes the sump a good idea. As mine was...

Nice!!!!

Thanks for the pic Roger.

Your pond is nothing short of fantastic. Shows real workmanship and the time you put into it and gave me a bunch of great ideas. I'll post when I get started on mine and maybe run an idea or 2 by you.

Thanks again and great work on the pond.

Thanks for the info. I already checked out the Neighborhood fish farm but I will ook into the one you mentioned. Are there breeders or importers who keep larger fish for sale because I already have a 1 1/2 foot redtail in a pond that will be moved when I construct a new one. Thanks again for your he...

Need info on outdoor ponds with s.a catfish and others

I've had several south american catfish in some large tanks, Red tails, limas, tigers. I know live in Miami and with the climate so warm was wondering if anyone had any info on setting up a nice large pond for catfish and other southamerican fish outside. Any ideas would be nice.
