Hello, The only tips I can give are not to use zoom since it tends to blur the pics. Much easier to blow it up on software. I usually try to use macro mode since it gets the pic closer to the subject and is a smoother transition. I also always clean the outside of the tank with a non-alcohol lotion ...

Hello again, Several statements have been made over the years about the lack of photos in the original printing. At the time I did the book, finding a publisher which would accept the project for anything other than minimal payment was not possible. A major international publisher offered me $350 as...

Hello, I had a pair a couple of years ago. They seem to be rather slow growing unless they are put in a tank by themselves. They always seemed to be skittish about competing with other fish for food was the eventual conclusion. My spawns were always very small, 6-8 max. A male and several females in...

Hello and thanks for the remarks, I still haven't got the quote thing down yet, so I'll do it the old fashioned way. The trace supplements I was talking about are simply used to get the required minerals back in the water for the fishes physiological functions as well as buffer reverse osmosis water...

Hello, I did a collecting trip a few years back in Hawaii. Only found 2 of the 5 introduced species, but also came across a couple of recipes for pleco caviar. They pull it straight from the nest after they've got dad roasting. I don't think it would go over very big here on the main land. Larry Vires

Hello again, The fish are usually fine with their fry. I've never seen them to eat their fry, but it has been heard of. Usually they are very good parents. The only drawback I can see from your breeding tank idea is the filtration. I have tried to simplify my technique several times by going to foam...

Hello again, I have a homemade mixture that I now use for all my herbivorous plecos. They all seem to grow and breed well with it, but fry can be coaxed to grow faster if I adjust it a little. The initial recipe is: 2 cans of french cut green beans (drained) 1/2 can of frozen salad shrimp 3 tsp. (15...

Hello and welcome to the forum, Your best bet is to get the male and his eggs out of the tank as quickly as possible. They are usually pretty good at guarding their eggs, but the fry are usually kicked out to fend for themselves as they hatch. That usually takes 5 days at 80 degrees and can vary by ...

Hello, I've bred both the albino and common A. cirrhosus for several years and haven't seen any problems with the bristle development. However, I have seen that males which were kept in competition with other males do not develop as nicely. When seperated, they normally go on to finish their develop...

Hello Fishnut2, I've tried the pH and hardness adjustments, but never made any difference. This is why I'm so stumped. I even gave consideration to the possibility that the temp was too high. That experiment just led to the belief that paleatus will spawn in anything that isn't frozen solid. W...

Hello all, This topic has reminded me of a problem that I had some time ago and never found a solution to. Hopefully, someone can shed some light on the issue as it drove me mad for some time. Hello Yann, I really don't remember what brand I was using. Given that I was more focused on other fish at the time, and the fact that I wasn't planning on spawning them -- Probably the cheapest I could find. Most staple dog foods contain around 43% protein and are made strictly from vegetabl...

Hello, Quite to the contrary on the dog food. It is very high protein and is comprised completely of vegetable matter. It is not a common practice, but is done on a regular basis in some North American native fish farms. If you look at the ingredients and nutritional values, it is very similar to th...

Hello, I don't have any personal experience with this species, but did spawn blue eyes several years ago. Some of that may apply, so I'll share what I can. They were being kept in a 55 gallon tank with a large pair of breeder angelfish. The water parameters were as follows: pH 6.5 - 6.8, total hardn...

Hello, Without knowing the actual species, I can't say how long it will take for the eggs to hatch. In my experience, it is more species related than temperature dependant. Anyway, without getting too far off topic, you can expect them to hatch anywhere from 4 to 8 days. Most fall closer to the 6 ma...
