I've seen the pattern of one of our original alpha males change due to fighting. he ended up with an O on his side where 2 stripes joined ;)

sorry guys - just to clarify. the parents are un related wild caughts - about 7 years old now.

I guess its like an albino - it can occur naturally, just not very often.

Hypancistrus sp(l173) is a different species than Hypancistrus zebra I have attempted to remove the L173 common name, but I fear it's not that easy to do - as there's a bug in Jools' scripts - I'll post a separate entry in the bugs section. -- Mats bugger :D Andrew - as long as you havent got 34 of...

thanks for the "helpfull" replies folks... I realise that the L173s are "probably" a different fish and have their own page - HOWEVER Jools still has it listed against the L046 / L098 /L173 species page. :?: I appreciate they are the same fish eg Hypancistrus Zebra... thats made ...

Not doubting you... does the head shape look the same?

Top fin shape will vary I guess but all in the tank had the same shape top fin... (6 or so fish)

enlighten on that behaviour (Funky's clip). It seems to me, that young Bristlenose wouldn't be ready to stake out territory, or mates. Could it be similar behaviour to young Cats, that 'play fight', in order to build skills they'd use later in life? Kanna We are currently breeding starlight bristle...

I hope you dont think that your species is L183 because it's not, the fry of L183 shows clearly white seams directly after the yolksac are consumed. not just me that often doubts it then :)...

Have you got any pictures? I been told when that the bands fade as the mature... Wasnt sure about the extent of the fadeing eg just to the white tips that these have....

Hi folks... I had a look at the latest offering from Aqualog today and these look like the new pictures that they have added for L183's :) happy I've got L183 - but dissapointed that they dont have teh promanante bands on their fins... Her are a couple more of the male - the females have been hiding...

Hi all - just seen the L182 entry has been updated... meaning my ID of these as L182's has been blown out of the water... They are about 5" and They are breeding so they have got to be pretty mature. Anyone got any ideas. (as they are breeding I want to be able to tell people what they are when...

looking at the bristles on the first I'll say its male - I've never had forked appear on a female - no matter how bristly she is.

they look like 2 different fish the first had fewer larger spots that the second.
