How small is too small? Question about tank-mates for Midnight catfish….

The care sheet says “not to be trusted with very small fish” – can anyone tell me how small is too small? I have eight of these guys in in a 125 gallon with 9 Diamond Tetras (fully grown) and they do not seem to have bothered them at all. I want to add more groups of tetras but of course those avail...

Re: Comfortable home for Zamora catfish?

You may have a different result than me, but my Zamoras won't use any of pleco tubes that I have that are open on both ends. Maybe if you found something larger and closed off one end somehow.....
I was thinking the bamboo might work since the one end has a smaller opening.

Re: Comfortable home for Zamora catfish?

I like the looks of the bamboo - maybe I will look into that in the future, if they don't seem happy. For now the "burrito" has been removed. My 10 year old counted them as they all poured out of it and was astonished they were all in there. I moved some of the driftwood around and made su...

Re: Comfortable home for Zamora catfish?

Thanks Mark! I would prefer to keep the tank more natural also. Maybe I will try to drill the holes bigger in the piece of bog wood I tried before. If the burrito is gone they may use it.... Of course my husband will complain about me dulling his drill again lol. I actually added it for the plecs bu...

Re: Comfortable home for Zamora catfish?

Thank you all for the suggestions. So from what some of you are saying, it does seem like they may prefer to be all together in a hiding place. Mark - I can take out the burrito cave and they will certainly hide individually in the wood - but I don't want to cause them stress if that is not what the...

Comfortable home for Zamora catfish?

For those of you who have Zamora catfish – what type of caves do you find they prefer to live in? I have 8 Zamora’s and they have jammed themselves into a ceramic burrito style pleco tube. As they have grown I am seeing more and more of their tails sticking out of the end – so I know they are runnin...

Re: Is it possible to have a yeast bloom in an aquarium?

HI Eric, Yes, no doubt it will take a while to get rid of it; but already the foam seems to be reduced from a week ago, so the water changes have been helping. The substrate may be the biggest problem, I switched to this sand about 6 monthes ago and it is so fine - to really stir it up when cleaning...

UPDATE: Re: Is it possible to have a yeast bloom in an aquarium?

Ok, so a friend who keeps marine fish suggested that I test my tank for phosphate. I have to admit I have never tested for it; and when I took sample to the LFS for a double-check, they didn't test for it either. Keeping in mind I have been changing 25% of the water every day for over a week now, I ...

Re: Is it possible to have a yeast bloom in an aquarium?

Thank you for your help, TwoTank, I have been doing daily water changes since last Friday and the water is much less cloudy now. It still starts to cloud up during the day, but much less. I think I have a handle on it now at least. I did also add Quick start; not sure if its helping or not. Wonder i...

Re: Is it possible to have a yeast bloom in an aquarium?

I knew the yeast was a long shot - the only thing that made me wonder was the yeasty smell... Yeah, I agree I was thinking it couldn't live in the water but just had to ask! My substrate is Carib Sea Supernaturals sunset gold sand. Water changes - yes, I have been doing weekly changes... I usually d...

Re: Is it possible to have a yeast bloom in an aquarium?

No, I have city water. I checked the current water report and nothing has changed. I do know what you mean about dissolved oxygen in the water. When it is cold here that is fairly commom and I have seen it before. This is just different. The best way I can describe it is, it looks like smoke billowi...

Is it possible to have a yeast bloom in an aquarium?

This may be a crazy question – I just have no other ideas right now as to the cause of my cloudy water. My 125 gallon has been cloudy since about the middle of December. It’s a milky white cloudiness. The tank is 125 gallons and has been set up for over 10 years with no problems. Two Filstar xp3 can...

Cory babies - question please

Today I found some Sterba cory fry in my filter basket - 2 that are about a quarter inch and 3 that are about the size of smallish newly born guppies (for lack of a better size reference). I put them in a breeder net and they seem active and healthy. I am wondering if I need to worry about the large...

Re: Potential heater burn?

My three H. sabaji are very mellow with each other - not sure how they are with other plecs. I think if he is trying to hide by the heater I would start by checking to see if there are enough hiding places in the tank for each to have their own spots - make sure they have multiple places to choose t...

Thanks Martin - I am going to try to stop in there tomorrow and geta couple more. I don't think caves will be a problem - the decora has one hollow under a log that she cal...

Re: Zamora Woodcat

HI Viktor! I remember your pics of the ponds you had here - very beautiful! That is along the lines of what I was thinking - they were swimming quite out in the open and did not seem skittish at the store. I may have to get more of them and try it; I wanted to make sure the opinion was that they wou...

Zamora Woodcat

My lfs has got some nice looking Zamora Woodcats in. I picked up three today. As expected they disapeared into the driftwood; but did come out to eat bloodworms just now and seem to be doing well. I am wondering if three is a good number for them, or if they would be more at ease in a larger group? ...

Re: Newly Adopted & Ill Eupterus

For the sand - when I used playsand even prefilters over the intake didn't keep it out of the filters. Of couse I had a large pleco who loved to dig around in it and kept it stirred up most of the time. You may have different results. However, it was only playsand I had a problem with - it is very f...

Hi, I have been following along on this thread for a while! I'm not sure if you have decided on substrate, but just wanted to comment on the play sand - I know a lot of people use it sucessfully, but I believe I read somewhere a few pages back that you have an aquaclear filter? If thats the case, I ...

Haha my first tank had flourescent pink gravel in it! Ugh... I soon outgrew that sort of thing. Easiest plants I found are java fern.... if I couln't kill it anyone should be able to grow it. I would give him some time, but if you use a turky baster you can squirt bloodworms right down to him. I wou...

lost a fishy friend..

Hi guys. I haven't posted here in a while, short on time lately.... Last week I lost a fish that I had for 20 years, a common pleco named Kalija. He is the fish that really got me into catfish (and my user name) and I wrote a little story of his life.... I wanted to share it and figured this was the...

Nice fish! I just wanted to add that you might want to take a look at the book, "South American Eartheaters" by Thomas Weidner, if you haven't already. Its got great info on S jurupari, and is one of my favs.

Thats very normal. If you want a real show, try frozen bloodworm, mine go nuts for it. I usually leave a very dim light on in the room after I feed them and sit and watch the show. I have one bold little one that will come out even in bright daylight for bloodworm though.
