This sounds like a case of Planaria. They often appear from uneaten food in gravel..etc.

No! dont use sand from the beach! The best type of sand is "silica" sand or "play-pit" sand but dont go over 2 inches in depth.

I've got a few of them which is the same size as yours for over a year now. Dont know if they are just "full" with fine eating or they are "gravid".
