Re: feeding live fish to predatory fish

This may be a weak point but perhaps a summary/conclusion could be helpful for the readers in posterity - not everybody has the time and the will to read through pages of stuff - many like skipping to conclusions, you know... but no one gets paid here again, so who would do it, if ever??

Re: Striped Raphael/Humbug -dying/gasping @ tank

Larry, I may be wrong but it appears to me that you confused the Bas Pels' 22-year old raphs that him and I touched upon with MissBooBoo's raphs that she's got 2.5 years ago. Anyway, my take is that I praise MissBooBoo for she clearly tried her best to post good, complete, and thorough info for anyb...

Re: Striped Raphael/Humbug -dying/gasping @ tank

1 table spoon = 3 teaspoons but anyway, it sounds that my experience with doradids was due to smth else; still, whatever that smth else is, it must have occurred repeatedly at the times of salt addition - I was using salt with meds, without meds, for symptoms, without symptoms, as profilactic... got...

Re: Striped Raphael/Humbug -dying/gasping @ tank

wow, they are 22 years old now! very very impressive.

just to clarify for others: one teaspoon (no heaping) is 5 ml = 5 g of water, likely about 7.5 g of salt, so 1 teaspoon per gallon works out to ~7.5 g per 3.785 l or roughly 2 g per liter

Re: feeding live fish to predatory fish

I had some problem but not severe weaning juvenile Juruenses off of live food to bloodworms and pieces of raw shrimp - but, truly, it could be the credit to the company of many other baby/juvenile cats, synos, bullheads, ID sharks, bumble bees, giraffe cats, colombian sharks, etc. Perhaps, my succes...

Re: Striped Raphael/Humbug -dying/gasping @ tank

It concerns me that nobody's writing about the experience I've had with raphaels and salt. This makes me question my interpretation. What I thought I had found is that Raphaels are salt intolerant (just like e.g., Dr. Johnson's www.koivet.com reputable website says). I've observed this with many: st...

Re: feeding live fish to predatory fish

there is plenty of videos seemingly made by immature individuals/teenagers giggling, gasping in excitement, and swearing in the background as a large predator, say alligator gar, kills and eats a live mouse... that's YouTube for you... Perhaps the YouTube folks think of themselves as a mirror. You k...

Re: black slime on gills???

Thank you, Larry! It sounds that you firmly do not believe that the ammonia killed them. When you said "...the fish samples microscopically so you at least had a reasonable point to develop a treatment plan", I assume you were talking about the initial set of observations - discolorations ...

Re: black slime on gills???

Crud!!! Well, alas, no more RTCs in the indoor pond - the other two RTCs have passed away - one (9") had similar blackish-very dark red-brown looking gills but not much slime and the other (1.5') had normal pink-red gills... No other external signs to blame. Half of other cats refused food Apr ...

Re: Large tank reseal ideas?????

I've resealed two tanks in the last few weeks, a 55 gal long (made in 1983) and a 27 gal hex (1987). They have been holding up so far well. 27 gal also features a crack across the entire one of the 6 facets and a small portion of the corner was crushed (20 years ago). My steps were: (1) using a razo...

Re: Tank space solution- Waterbridge???

Thanks, guys. Useful, thought-provoking and horizon-expanding stuff. I've been mulling over smth like that too. Pretty much Mats' design but using two bulkheads and a large-diameter flex pipe (accordeon style, for instance) in between. Having the bridge clear to view the fish go by may make for even...

Re: black slime on gills???

thank you! I had thought about putting meds into the 96-gal sump, but then I thought that it might ruin the bacteria colonies: even though the meds at their target concentrations are claimed not to affect the beneficial bacteria, at 10-100-1000 times the concentration, I imagine, the drugs (meant to...

Re: black slime on gills???

Thank you, DJ-Don. Hypothetically, could it be that Smiley ventured out of his hideout and swam through the places where I dropped the meds in the water, i.e., where the med concentration was far, far higher than normal and that had eventually killed him (although he fed one day after)? I tried to a...

Re: black slime on gills???

Loco, thank you, I appreciate the sentiments. Mats, I do not think the color of Smiley's underside ever changed. In fact, the other three RTCs, we have, have similar tummies - variably colored, patchy, mostly dark-brown/blackish and white/off-white tummies (one juvenile and two sub-adults). The pics...

black slime on gills???

Hi all, our hearts are broken today as we lost our beloved RTC Smiley. He was about a foot TL. Very good all around in life (we've had him for only about a month) and still beautiful in death. He was the only one feeding out of our hands and just had 5 raw shrimp 3 days ago, eating well and eagerly ...

hence, it appears quite unlikely that my fish can be bullheads, based on the size alone. Of course, the tail shape is definitive, as pointed out by sidguppy!

Re: a pair of 3 foot channel cats, are they not?

a small excerpt from DEC NY site: The brown bullhead is a medium sized fish - averaging about eight to 14 inches in length. It has the typical catfish appearance of a broad, flat head and dark barbels around the face. Its square tail and mottled side coloration distinguishes it from other members of...

there is an informative article on catfish of NY state, including bullheads - yellow, brown and black at http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7046.html Not sure which one is meant by the contributors who mentioned a "bullhead". Perhaps there are even more bullhead species??
