Re: Best gravel for catfish?

I used smooth pebbles like 0.5"-1.5", grey, brownish, etc., as well as something called river nuggets, which are not smooth but not sharp either, ~0.5", yellow-brownish. Can't say I noticed any preference from my fish. Keep in mind that gravel has a lot more free space versus sand and...

Thank you, Master Jools! :) Let's see if we can indeed open. Thank you for hosting our build thread for all these years.

Re: My Public Aquarium: exhibit blues - how to make them?

Thank you. There are some hurdles remaining, hopefully just bureaucratic but who knows what can come up as a result of getting a business license and the final municipal inspections. What remains now is we need to get a permit for an "unpermitted" building structure, that is the pavilion/l...

Vulture Catfish has black filaments protruding from body?

Asking for a peer on MFK: https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/foru ... st-8343054

Is this normal and if so, what are these black short "hairs"? Click and enlarge to see clearly.

Re: Who does your Syno pal around with?

Hello neighbor, There are riverine large synos who are solitary in the wild and shoaling smaller synos lacustrine (that come from lakes). I've read your account with interest and I recall reading others where peers report unusual associations of tank mate fishes. Still to me it sounds unusual and st...

Re: My Public Aquarium: exhibit blues - how to make them?

I cannot prove it didn't happen but I don't think it was possible. There was only one resident in the sump of about 4", the rest were far smaller and 75% very thin with a caved in tummy. There hasn't been much food escaping the two 240 gal tanks and washing down into the sump. Of course, I neve...

Unless the hand in the photo is tiny, these may look too big for bufonius, these look well over 12" for total length.

Re: About filtration

Just to be clear, Darrel, are you saying running a tank as described is asking for trouble sooner or later?

What cycles the nitrogen? Plants and whatever BBs live in the tank on the surfaces?

Re: Feels good to be back in the lab

Nice to see the science marching on and attacking the undescribed 40% of the total fish species. I feel so close and intimate, a hair away from included in the cutting edge taxonomy R&D. But that's just me :) As for my earlier comment, it was meant as an "obvious" and obviously silly d...

It would appear Dr. Ng is using an optical microscope and calipers to obtain biometrics of that candiru-like preserved fish in the plastic Petri dish. No?

Thank you so much for this.

I am surprised, probably for my ignorance, because these are not herbivore or plant-based pellets. Still, a pretty good pellet. How much are they per lb?

Re: Syno rescued

Perhaps you've found the best feed there is for LLD. If you cared, please, post the ingredient list / info.

I prior cases I've heard just adding greenery / algae to the diet seemed to be all that was needed.

Welcome to the Planet!

The reasons and the solutions can be many ranging from leaving the fish be or medicating it.

Good clear photos may be a good place to start.

Re: Sick Synodontis nigriventris

It can be a hard task. Does the fish feed? Could it be heater burns, or tank mate conflicts? I think the water is likely too soft for this fish. What's KH and GH? This is one red flag for me. If KH is 1-2 degrees, I'd bump it up to at least 3-5, so the pH is buffered. If the GH is the same, I'd bump...

Re: Revision of Auchenoglanis

The confusion over Auchenoglanis cats goes on, it seems, including what hobbyists get from the PCF Cat-eLog.
