Re: Is it possible to diagnose fish tuberculosis?
Working at a pet shop, I see problems like that quite often. Many times, when customers bring in their old fish there is at least one or two fish per community tank that has a kinked spine. In a lot of the store's display tanks, the older cardinals and neons also develop kinked spines. In my ...

Re: Dyed fish
As a fish store employee, I can tell you customers come and go but make sure you mention you are a knowledgeable hobbyist. At work, it's always the 1% of truly interested and knowledgeable hobbyists that makes the day fun. You might want to explain how these kinds of fish are frowned upon by ...

Re: Green Belly Disease ??
I can say this has happened to about 85% of all of my plecos. Most of the time, it happens within a few weeks but I had two die from this after months. I've had it wipe out bristlenose plecos as well as L204 plecos. With my older bristlenose plecos that I've had for months, it seemed to strike after ...

Cannot really contribute much on the species, but my A. marmoratus and A. sp 3 would only eat live feeder fish when I first got them. The sp. 3 came in rough and took a couple days to eat the feeders as well. After a while, they are all eating krill and bloodworm, but IME they all had to be started ...

Re: Red Baby Whale Catfish? ( Important )
Debating taxonomy with exporters isn't worth it. Most of them don't know every species, and if one fish looks just like another except for color they say it's the same species. If I had to guess, I would say it's some Denticetopsis sp. I've only seen Denticetopsis seducta before, but other species ...

Re: Oil Catfish ( Centromochlus perugiae )
Just a heads up, I bred a similar woodcat and had terrible luck with the fry. I only fed them microworm 1-2 times a day. I'd imagine a well established aquarium with lots of driftwood full of microorganisms for them to graze on between feedings would have been much more beneficial.

Re: Baby Whales Catfish ( Cetopsis coecutiens )
We get these in at work sometimes. They almost never do well in the store. They are always active, but never go nuts for food like the cetopsis on youtube. They also seem to have really red fins when we get them. Perhaps if that is the case for you, treating them with an anti-parasitic medication ...

Re: Platysilurus mucosus growth?
Thanks for all the info. I am debating putting the catfish in my community aquarium then for a while until it gets larger. These guys are indeed really shy. I have mine in a tank with two Morgurnda gudgeons, and I had to feed these guys so much food in order for the cat to get any that after a week ...

Platysilurus mucosus growth?
I just picked up a 3 1/2" Platysilurus mucosus and I was wondering if anybody had any ideas on how quickly these cats grow. I know they are supposed to stay small, but I am wondering how long it should be before he gets around 5" and can go in my 165 gallon aquarium. Does anybody have any experience ...

Re: Cycling a new tank with mature filter
Depending on your tank setup, usually the sponge filter has enough bacteria to bypass a new cycle. In a bare tank, almost all of your bacteria will build up on the sponge filter, but in a heavily decorated tank, with a buried sponge filter, there will be less bacteria on the filter and there will be ...

Re: Tatia intermedia eggs!
I forgot to update, all the fry died. They were eating microworm/bbs twice a day, but still didn't do so well. If I had to guess, I would say these fry would naturally eat a lot of microorganisms that live on driftwood when they are young, and being a newly set up 2 1/2 gallon aquarium with only a ...

Out of all the pimelodes we get in at my LFS, these are the only ones who never ate anything but live fish. Over time they may go for frozen fish/krill, but I could not imagine them eating pellets.

Re: Ripsaw Cats Feeding
The ripsaw cat we have at work is super active. It has become completely diurnal and sleeps at night. We have one that is close to 3' in a 2000g aquarium. It hid a lot in the beginning, but everything else in the tank is really outgoing and the catfish soon learned to swim up to the top with the ...

Re: Tatia intermedia eggs!
That was my previous plan, but I had no plastic boxes to hang in the aquarium. It's good to know that it doesn't work with these eggs though so I don't do that next time. I'm pretty excited for when these guys hatch. Has good feeding been the trigger for everybody else's Tatia intermedia breeding?

I also found somebody with microworm cultures, so I will be able to feed these guys more than BBS.

It looks like my Tatia intermedia just spawned for the first time! I have a group of 4 or 5 who are 3-4". I will try to get a picture from the side if they move for me.
We have L129's at work, and when compared side by side, they didn't look a lot alike. The L129's had thinner yellow. I can also add, that these guys didn't really have any nice black like some L129s do.

L066?
I had my work's wholesaler order some "L204s" since they were really cheap on the list. I thought it was a bit odd, since most places sell them as Emporers or Flash plecos. Anyways, this is what we got in. I thought it was a Pseudo Zebra pleco, until I compared them closely. The patterning is much ...

Re: Skin problem with Ageneiosus cats
I have been planning on doing softwater experiments and after reading about it, many people claim that hardness is much more important than pH due to osmoregulation, and with higher pH comes much harder water and possibly by doradids and woodcats getting skin problems in "high pH" water, it could ...

Re: Skin problem with Ageneiosus cats
Honestly though, keeping fish that thrive in my water conditions narrows it down mostly to livebearers, African cichlids and a few other African fish. In all of the US, pH is usually 7.5-8 from what I have seen and choosing only fish that come from that pH range sounds a little excessive. While I am ...

Re: Skin problem with Ageneiosus cats
I don't really want to alter my pH because it would be extremely difficult to get pH and hardness of new water exact each water change and I could imagine the instability of the new water would do more damage.

I work in a highly successful LFS, and it is true that if a customer wants a big fish, nothing is stopping them. My boss doesn't order ID sharks or pacus anymore because they get too large, and even the worst fish keeper can grow them large enough for size to be a problem. When we get sturgeons ...

Skin problem with Ageneiosus cats
Right now I have three ageneiosus cats. One is in a 165 and the others are in a 20g for now. I've had rosy reds and feeder gambusia do this to the cats, and the last one ...

Re: Scientific Describing Of Fish
Could be outdated, but in Dr. Axelrod's Handbook of Tropical Fishes he has a small section about describing fishes. To me it looks like you need to obtain a type specimen, find out it's locality (not sure if this part is mandatory), write a scientific journal on it explaining why it belongs to it's ...
