You're also right about it being a hybrid. Husbandry should be similar to that of most other riverine synos.

Yes, they are great as both caves and a buffer. You can even bury them in the substrate for a convenient and invisible buffering solution. I never even bother boiling the shells... shuck fresh oysters and them toss them in the tank, leaving the fish to clean up any scraps of flesh.

Power heads also wreak havoc on most computer monitors. Only the higher end monitor models have enough shielding to prevent the strong magnetic interference from having an effect on flicker. Something else to think about when you put that tank in your SO's computer room :-)

If you do not list your location in your profile, it is impossible to answer this question more precisely.

I could very well be wrong :-) This "fact" may just be an urban legend of sorts, but I have heard it repeated as fact on several occasions. This paper may shed some light (pardon the pun) on the situation: Peter C. Gehrke, Influence of light intensity and wavelength on phototactic behaviou...

Yes, catfish eyes are insensitive to red light, just like many other (all?) fish. However, I wouldn't recommend switching from normal wavelength light bulbs to red light during the day, as this could throw your fishes' night and day cycle off (they would feel like it was dark 24/7). What you can do ...

In my experience, they are great community fish that are fine in slow water. However, they do best in planted tanks. YMMV, but I wouldn't hesitate to add one to a well established community tank.

Maybe the larger ones like S. tanganaicae, but I doubt the smaller species are big predators. I'd worry more about fishing eagles and Bathybates than synos if I were a fish in the lake.

Phyllonemus

Robert Schelly, Roger Bills and John Lundberg have just returned from a collecting expedition to Lake Tanganyika. I took a look at a couple of their field photos, and was amazed to see Phyllonemus spp. over 20 cm long. There are apparently several undescribed species in the lake, with Paul Skelton a...

IIRC, a member of this forum, Greggo, has both the "captive bred" and real deal. The hybrids lose their bright coloring early on and turn a uniform grayish, similar to S. sorex. S. sorex may be a possible species in the mix that forms the hybrids.

Simply dragging a big net through the lake won't work; due to decompression, most fish will be dead if you haul it up!
Yes, IIRC the collectors use giant anchored cages to slowly bring the fish up. Supposedly takes several days to allow the fish caught at depth to off gas.

Breeding with hosts will give you much higher yields IMO. We have had the northern variety cave spawn, and the number of fry that came out of it in the end was pitiful compared to what I hear of when spawning w/ hosts. The fry also seem to grow MUCH slower when spawned w/o a host.
