Chalk it up on the "nice to have" list. If and when the CLog moves to a dynamic content management system, it'll be a lot easier to add weird features like WAP access.

I think it went over a lot of heads :-) In another case-mod turned fish mod, CPU or power supply fans work great as a poor man's chiller. Using a seven inch fan running during the daytime I'm able to keep a 125 gallon at 72-74ºF, which is amazing considering the ambient temperature in the apartment...

Looking at the "Syno Bible" (Poll 1971), I now think you can call your fish robbianus. Based on the drawing in the book, the humeral process on your fish matches robbianus better than nigrita, but the two fish are so similar it's hard to tell.

That's not the point. There is a member here with 5000 posts, but I don't ever recall reading a post of his that wasn't informative and relevant. I suggest you take a look at our rules before you overstay your welcome.

Brochis (which I assume is what you're talking about) have more dorsal fin rays among other differences. This is usually the easiest way to tell them apart. On another note, please stop replying to every topic in sight with a one or two word post. It contributes nothing to the conversation, is anno...

Synodontis cf. nigrita is the best name for your fish right now. The cf. means similar to nigrita but not quite.

Your "robbianus" is actually a species closely related to S. nigrita, as Pete said. The real Synodontis nigrita looks like this: http://planetcatfish.com/images/full/mochokidae/synodontis/nigrita/1.jpg Among other differences, the adipose fin on your fish is shaped and positioned different...

If you don't have a heat sealer handy, a zip-lock or even normal fish bag works fine. Both are very hardy plants that should be fine going first-class mail.

Re: Mail order cats

I was looking seriously at a Sun Catfish. They dont grow to huge sizes and they are pretty active. They get large (over a foot), eat anything they can fit in their mouths and you will never, EVER see it in the open if it has a nice cave. Not a good aquarium fish IMO. Try for some nice synos (or ple...

A Gibbi is great for growing large and eating Algea, but since you don't want one, I can only suggest off hand after browsing the cat-e log a Scarlet pl*co. They grow large enough for the Oscar to not have problems with it and they look very nice. According to its feeding habits it doesnt say much ...

They ignore each other. I don't think keeping a shoal of 2 ft long boxy fish (yes, I have seen several specimens around that size) would be feasible, especially since they grow EXTREMELY quickly. Maybe in that 50'x50'x10' tank you have ;-)

IIRC, there are contributors to this site and members of the forum who have kept/seen 90+ cm specimens. 100 cm seems like a reasonable "normal" size. Fishbase is now quite accurate on the sizes of South American fishes in particular, since they have revised their numbers with data from a r...

I had the bad experience of getting a smallish Synodontis flavitaeniatus stuck in a hair net, which has put me off them. If you driftwood has holes in it, you can shove the stuff into them. If not, you can always drill holes. I have also used stainless steel wire with some success.

You can use boiled oak leaves on top of your substrate, which will slowly lower the pH. If you do a search on the topic, there are several threads discussing this.
