Re: Malawi Setup
We have njassae "gold head" in with Mbuna, they seem to have topped out at around 4" (I suppose it depends how slowly they grow), lovely plump fish, the cichlids try to drive them off from territories but fail miserably. 4 Synos in c. 100 gallons seem to have plenty enough space, neve...

Re: My Megladoras uranoscopus! (irwini)
As for the niger, once he gets big he will be in a 300 gallon, and then if someone can prove to the owner that he has a tank above 300 gallons, he gets sold. There are a quite a few people in my state that have 1,000 gallon ponds so who knows. You'd be better off making sure that there is a definit...

Interesting display. How is the wood fixed? Larger Hatchetfish or Triportheus would look great in there, bt only if the top is not open.

Re: My Megladoras uranoscopus! (irwini)
We have an O. niger in 1000+ gallons (proper ones at that), I sometimes worry that it looks cramped. 300 gallons is no way big enough.

Well, the floods are now on order, for aquaria where plant growth isn't a priority they might be just the job. Hate messing around with big MH fittings.

Re: LED floods
Those look like the Megaman PAR16 7W jobs we've been using for some months, they're very nice lamps for up to 24" depth. One had to go back almost straight away as it was faulty, but it was replaced without quibble and they've done nicely ever since. Looking at ramping up the power now, apparen...

LED floods
We've had a play around with LED spots and we're fairly happy with them (some of the LED units sold specifically for aquarium use have been nothing short of awful), we're now looking at these http://www.mgc-lighting.com/downloads/spec-sheet-led-luvium-lv1-series-5500k/ Anyone got any good/bad/indiff...

Indeed, I've only ever read one sketchy forum thread that seemed to fade away before any details were revealed. I'd love to see 1/2 inch glass cats.

Re: plec's do they chew and eat silicone tank sealer
The only times I can definitely recall this happening was with Leporacanthicus (seen it multiple times, the most notable was a large specimem which gouged out big chunks of sealant within a very short time).

Can anyone give us permission to use as a one-off a pic of a galeatus driftwood? We need one for a label.

Re: Biotope tank for Horabagrus brachysoma
The Chalakudy is the most obvious choice, given the excellent paper available on the fish fauna and the fact that the Western Ghats is an area that features in literature as a target area for education around conservation, but we may stretch this based on fish availability (and if we see a fish we r...

Re: Biotope tank for Horabagrus brachysoma
AS with Minipol, we're going to be interested in seeing some more habitat pics so that we can try to create a reasonable visual facsimile of a river from that area. Lighting will be 6500K hetal halide as suitable LEDs for the depth are still expensive, although in time this will change. We'll be usi...

Re: Biotope tank for Horabagrus brachysoma
It's probably going to end up as a general south Indian display. It's going to be about showing the diversity of fish in India while still retaining some elements of biogeographical integrity. The Indian subcontinent is one area we're not currently representing, we've been planning to do so for some...

Re: Biotope tank for Horabagrus brachysoma
We're planning something similar in a c.1000 gallon display. This is very useful information for us, as H. brachysoma was on the list as a possible inhabitant, but we may have to reconsider based on the possible predation issues. Dawkinsia spp. and Denison's Barbs will certainly be included, other o...

Re: S. njassae
The four fish we obtained from Mike's Rifts have proven to be great additions to the reworked display. There are plenty of cichlid fry appearing so they're not having any noticeable impact there, but the snails that were present appear to have been sent to meet their maker. Although these particular...

Re: Short-bodied fish in the aquarium trade
I'm not sure, the results are too consistent, too uniform and seen in too many species for it to be selective breeding in my opinion, plus I think the producers of these fish want faster results than waiting for things like Paroon Sharks etc. to reach maturity to produce a next generation (from whic...

Been asked a question elsewhere on how these things are produced (specifically in relation to Pangasius in this case), can anyone elaborate?

Male Megalechis picta wanted
Managed to end up with three female M. picta (they were small WC fish and the position of the coracoids wasn't that obvious at the time, so if anyone needs a lady or wants to offload a male, please get in touch.

Watch out for the natives carrying something that the exotics may not have the immune system to cope with, even if you shift them out well in advance there could still be something wicked this way comes.

Can anyone allow us use of an image of Synodontis njassae for one of our tank labels? We've got four now out on display, we're currently writing up the information but we didn't manage to get a decent pic while they were in quarantine.

Re: Pond Build
Best things I ever kept in a pond like this were some Gymnogeophagus, big bug eyes looking to the great foodgod of the skies and the colours were like nothing you'd see in an aquarium. I also like the Dwarf Hoplos I had outside, being active they were much more visible than Corydoras.

All sounds pretty good to me. We've had a decent-sized group now since 2005 under similar conditions, along with cherry shrimps, Pangio sp. Hyalobagrus etc.
Keep a good number, they'll look much better.

Head length relative to the predorsal area is different IMO (lower fish has a longer head).
