It'll also provide a lot of bulk for the intestines. Ancistrus and Sturisoma also appreciate leaves. We had good success with Sturisoma fry by using green broadleaf twigs, blanching them in hot water and then putting them into the rearing tank. Sometimes I think it's just surface area for browsing t...

Re: any clue what they might be.

Ever fed live tubifex/blackworms? I've seen those worms in aquaria which have been fed with aquatic livefoods and/or wild collected decor, I've never had any indication that they do any harm to fish whatsoever.
The eggs look like artemia cysts, have you ever fed BBS or adult artemia (live or frozen)?

Corydoras under UV

Odd question of the day, triggered by a discussion with a student...
Does anyone know if any studies have been undertaken to look at superficially-similar Corydoradine catfish, using a UV light source and a UV sensitive camera?

Re: Aquatics Live, London 2011

Sadly no, we've got a conference the week before which takes priority, but I think it's a very positive move to bring the aquatic trade and hobby to the fore, there's no real reason why it shouldn't have just as high a profile in the media as gardening, cookery or home improvements.

Re: Pieces

Pretty sure it's just due to the lingua franca vocabulary used in an international trade, where a literal translation doesn't quite work. The English-language hobby side of things also adopts stuff from other languages, often intact (e.g. aufwuchs, mattenfilter, gold saum).

Excellent! That should be the uniform of choice for any aquatic retailer worth its salt (in a larger size of course). You could have a different fish profile to indicate various specialisms.
I also think the speakers at the next catfish convention should be made to wear them.

Lowest fish possibly a young Gnathocharax steindachneri. Can't make up my mind whether the headstanderoid is a young Pseudanos trimaculatus or a young Leporinus. I agree that the mottled dude or dudess is a young Myleus or similar.

Supersaturation

Thought it worth mentioning that the tap water around these parts seems to be currently supersaturated with dissolved gases, some fish are more sensitive to this than others, but worth bearing in mind depending on how you do your water changes.

Would hand/target feeding be helpful with the Banjo? I have a smaller tank with African Dwarf Frogs that require hand feeding, as well as some bettas that are on a diet. No need with Banjos, they'll shuffle their way out of wherever they are tucked as soon as they smell something good. They'll also...

Re: Many fish for free to good homes

We could offer some of your fish a home, one where they'd be on public display so that others can enjoy them. However, having read why you are offering them out, take a little while to reconsider. You've got some very nice fish there, obviously well-cared for. Take a walk in the sunshine, maybe thin...

Snip off the head with your thumb nail/blade/pair of scissors, they are then unable to bury themselves.

Why not try the classifieds section on here, that way you can be fairly sure the fish will be going to someone who will appreciate it? You're likely to get more for the fish via that route than you'd get offered in store credit, but either way you're not looking at very much, although they aren't of...

Check out your local hosing (not hosiery!) supplier to buy potable-quality reinforced hosing at whatever diameter you need for a fraction of the cost/metre of the usual stuff. Comes in a nice compact roll where you can cut off whatever lengths you need.
