Re: Mimics, lineages and chance of hybridization
This seems like a good place to ask instead of starting a new thread. Are C. reticulatus and C. sterbai able or likely to cross breed, or could I keep them together safely?

Pur faucet filters use carbon cartridges, so TDS, GH, and KH should not be significantly effected..Plecomania. wrote:so you use a water purifier filter that attaches to a faucet i guess? I wonder what TDS, GH, and KH you get from that filtered water? can you test?

Now that I know the problem I can fix it, just hate to see my fish pay the price for my mistaken assumption that my RO unit would deal with chloramine.rmc wrote:Sorry to hear that! You're making me want to go home and test my RO Water

it is reconstituted with RO Right and Discus Essentials mineral supplements.
I forgot about this - yes the RO Right alone should be enough. I would be doubtful of internal parasites too, just a thought.

Re: C. sterbai lethargy and deaths following water change
I don't know for sure, but I think the self-poisoning theory doesn't hold true in a larger amount of water. I thought that only had negative effects when the fish were in a small amount of water (like a bag). The toxins dissipate to non-harmful levels in more water - I think.

Re: C. sterbai lethargy and deaths following water change
Just to have thought of everything - how long was the water treated with oxygen?
All RO systems remove all oxygen from the water, and therefore RO water needs some 24 hours with air bubbling through it in order to get the oxygen dissolved and make the water usable for fish.

Re: C. sterbai lethargy and deaths following water change
A quick question but why are you changing the water so much? I'm not familiar with RO myself, for my sterbais I do a 30% WC with regular treated (prime) tap water on a 60G with around 40 sterbai (juvies to adults) tank is at 78F (room temp) and mine are flourishing.

C. sterbai lethargy and deaths following water change
Had an odd occurrence last night and I'm not sure what may have caused it. After water changes last night my sterbai became lethargic and I lost 3 of the 10 during the night. Water parameters are good, pH 6.5, NH3 and NO2 are zero and NH3 is nearly undetectable. My water source is RO treated with RO ...

Taking a shot in the dark here, maybe an iridescent shark ? If so then I would trade it back ASAP, they are a very common fish that is not at all suitable for the home aquarium.

Re: Corydoras 'julii"
I would also favour C. trilineatus but without origin it is difficult to be absolutely sure.
Only the specimen in the second last picture looks a bit weird.
I'm assuming they are farmed fish, my LFS doesn't usually deal in wild caught corys.
Is the pectoral fin spine really kind of orange ...

I know none are true julii, just wasn't sure if the last two were trilineatus or "contaminant" species since their patterns are so different from the rest.Narwhal72 wrote:They are all trilineatus. C. julii has a spotted pattern to the head and these all have a reticulated pattern.

Corydoras 'julii"
I cleared out the "julii" tank at my LFS today and wanted to confirm the ID, are they all trilineatus? A couple have odd patterns to them and I wasn't sure if that was within the normal range of variability for the species or if something else hitched a ride with them.

They won't, quartz and amethyst (a type of quartz) are made up of inert SiO2, the same mineral that makes up pool filter sand.Richard B wrote:I'm not actually sure quartz or amethyst would alter the water chemistry at all & i don't see the benefits. Common goldfish would live well in a mineral poor water.

Very nice, you should see a big difference in the size and health of your goldfish compared to the ones you had in bowls before.

Re: Sick corys, please help.
I order some fish and they arrived yesterday, set them up in a 12G with sand substrate, live plants, 30G sponge filter and 4" air bar. The fish were wild caught from Brazil, 20 eques (which I believe to be melantonaenia now), 10 Arcuatus, all are juveniles to almost adults. The tank was cycled with ...
