Re: cholla wood in L397 tank
Cholla is actually pretty soft. It's the skeleton of the cholla cactus so not as hard or dense as wood from actual trees.

Re: Opinions about stirring sand or gravel during weekly water changes?
My BNs would prefer that I do deep gravel vac every day as it turns up stuff they can eat. I have to be careful not to suck them up as they also like to sucker around on and in the vacuum tube. One of my male blue-fins comes out of his cave to attack the tube when it gets too close to his cave. The ...

Where the Xingu Bends and Will Soon Break
A hotly contested megadam threatens one of the world’s greatest assemblages of rapids-adapted fishes and homogenizes an incubator for evolutionary diversity.

Have been able to get a better look at this guy, though no photos - he's darker and more striped than the photo, though not a P. maccus stripe pattern. He's more black/grey than P. maccus color so I'll go with P. gnomus for now.

Re: rescue with a synodontis ill-treated
I agree that Anubias would be a good choice but just be sure to tie the rhizome to something - don't bury it in sand or gravel because it will rot. The roots will eventually attach to whatever you tie it to - driftwood, rock, etc. It's always a great day when we hear that Alfred continues to thrive!...

Re: What fish are okay in a bn pleco breeding aquarium?
I've had successful BN spawns in a planted tank with Madagascar and Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish (much larger than the nano fish you mentioned). If the BN male is any good nobody can get near the eggs. The only time I saw a baby eaten was when one was swimming. When they're suckering around on stuff the R...

Re: Another Pleco ID?
The tank has Mopani and cholla wood, all of which have been submerged for over a year now so they're quite soft. I also feed Repashy Morning Wood. One of these days when I re-do this tank I'll be able to get better pictures.

Thanks Silurus & Catfishchaos! That looks like it to me, and I figured too that it was a boy 'cause it was so *hairy* :d . I got a real mixed bag with the free fish from the LFS - male clown pleco, female chaetostomus formosae, this guy and who knows what else. Going to have to tear the tank dow...

Thanks much! I was thinking formosae also. There's one more in the tank but it continually hides so no photos of it. I need to re-do this tank anyway and hopefully can get better photos.

Staying tuned! I retrieved the remaining one from my LFS and it appears I have 2 very *hairy* males and no females And 3 chaetostoma formosae (I think). So no luck here

Re: L239
One particular male (Sanou) now always comes out to eat when the lights are on. There's a juvenile BN who gets very perturbed and vibrates his fins at Sanou, who ignores him and continues to eat. (The BN is going to the LFS tomorrow!) But the sleeping one is really quite grotesque, as well as lookin...

Re: Sexing Clown Panaque?
I agree re photo quality. I think what I'm going to have to do is just get the remaining fish at the LFS and photograph them there. There's no way I can get a good photo at home if the fish doesn't cooperate - which they're not prone to do of course. At the LFS I can hold the fish and have the clerk...

ID for these Plecos?
These were given to my LFS by a client who was moving and simply identified as tiger plecos. However, there are 2 different types. They're around 3-4" TL. (Sorry for the lousy photos but the best I could manage with cell phone + murky tank.) These are basically brown with light tan markings and...

Mine seem to have acclimatized quite well. They're not showing any stress coloration and have staked out caves / territories. Though they're not out and about during the day I can easily find them and see how they're doing. They are eating Repashy gell foods and also fresh vegetables. They seemed to...

Re: L239
They are more visible with the moonlights, though still pretty reclusive. The piggy eats his(?) fill and then dashes back to his cave. I make sure there's enough food for all of them and since piggy doesn't eat it all and doesn't guard it, there's enough for everybody. (I have 3 baby BNs with them a...
