Re: Otocinclii not eating/over eating

Just noticed that some of the more lethargic ones have green stomachs... Is this something good (they ate algae) or bad (some kind of infection)? I suspect its just the light shining through their small bodies making it easy to see. Many plant eaters spend long times with little or slow movement as...

Re: Otocinclii not eating/over eating

Oto's need algae, and are only relaxed when resting on plants. Putting them in a plant free tank, would be like requesting you to sleep in a tent in a tiger infested swamp. sufficient geen algae can be raised by putting stones from a tank in aquariumwater in the full sun. I see you are from Turkey,...

Otocinclii not eating/over eating

I am having a weird issue with my common otocats and that is some of them have immensely protruding stomachs (over eating) whereas others have lean stomachs (under eating). None of the under eating ones seem emaciated beyond help at this point but efforts to get them to eat have not resulted well. A...

Re: lemon drop bristle nose

They are a xanthic form of Ancistrus catfish. It is a mutation where fish lacks all pigments in the body except yellow so the pattern on the body and fins does not appear. Breeding these to an albino would (most likely) result in offspring that are all brown/black (i.e. regular brown bristlenose cat...

Hi, Although the difference is most cases like Eric wrote there are expections: C. trilineatus with only spots on the head, C. julii with a reticulated pattern, in C. trilineatus I even had one specimen without the midlateral line on one side. They are very flexible with respect to pattern and we c...

Re: how do you tell L144 from lemon bn?

The one you have is a lemon bristlenose if it has blue/black eyes. if the eyes are red it is an albino common. L144 come from an area that is not collected from & are not in the hobby except for a few individuals. If you have obtained it from a specialist who can tell you the ancestry back to s...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?

It is possible that a fish is homozygous for TWO of the albino mutations. I wonder if such fish would be snow white. here is a post from someone here on the site... perhaps this could answer your questions? Hi, well, I am not a biologist, so perhaps a geneticist can better explain (or perhaps even ...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?

There are at least two albino BN genes, both of which have yellow bodies. I do not know if there is a third albino gene with snow white body and pink eyes. There is definitely another mutation with yellow body and black eyes. What are the differentiating characteristics of these two albino BN genes...

Yes, all of them are Hypans. The first batch are 201s IME. The others with the bigger spots look H. Contradens. Then again, photos were taken during stressful conditions, which could somehow make identification more challenging. Nevertheless, they all look very good! Thanks! Any chance of gender id...

Re: Albino BN catfish refusing to spawn... acting weird

The odds are good they have a parasite. I'm sorry, I was away at CatCon and didn't take my laptop. If the parameters are good and you're doing water changes regularly, you definitely need to treat them. I prefer ProFormC for external parasites (or in their gills), but if you don't have access to it...

it's to complex to predict when they will spawn again , (factors like : food , age , water change , atm pressure, etc), you can try to trigger them or let them do their thing. for easier eggs colection you can use a spawing mop . i use some anubias floating plants ,and my Corydoras Panda like to de...

Re: Albino BN catfish refusing to spawn... acting weird

Just increase the surface disturbance or filtration. That should fix it :). Re: Albino BN catfish refusing to spawn... acting weird

Plecos that swim to the top of the tank need more oxygen. The odds are good you are covering too much of the surface with plants and not providing enough surface disturbance. Without actual test results (most shops will test the basics for free) it's really hard to guess. Barbie Hmm, bravo! Good ca...

Get a test kit, could very well be water parameters. Could you describe your setup in the interim? Tank size, filtration, other inhabitants, water change schedule, etc. this might spur some thoughts. I had a pair of LF albino's that threw nothing but albino LF fry for a long time. Then one day they started to throw shortfin albino and then both shortfin and long fin brown fry. Had these catfish for about a year and a half now... they have spawned only once and then the male threw out the eggs and played around with them for a couple days before eating them (could be the females too though).
