Re: Farlowella Platorynchus?
IMAG0942.jpg two of them seem to have the right scale plate pattern on their belly for platorynchus: IMAG0946.jpg IMAG0944.jpg But number 3 is a little different in the scale plates: IMAG0943.jpg Is this common variation within a species or does it indicate a different species? Cheers Johannes

Farlowella Platorynchus?
Hey,
yesterday I found these 3 big farlowellas at my lfs. Had to take them home.
Sadly I have little experience with farlowella sp.
Got a hint that these might be platorynchus.
They all have a TL of 22cm.

Phew, well it should be a female. But she does not look like she is in the mood to lay some eggs. Might just be the angle of the picture.

Hey Anders,
They all have odontodes on their tails at 6cm?
12 out of 12 males is not impossible but very unlikely. maybe they are not all males, after all?

Would like some Input on these Xingu Wormlines
I purchased all of these as L173, some do look a little like it, others don't. Might be nice L333 white lines.

Re: How will Gold Nugget fare in my hard water?
Water hardness is usually never a problem for plecos to strive in. (Unless its suuuuuper hard) All gold nuggets in the trade are wild caught animals. They are quite specialized eaters and have a hard time adapting to the industrial foods. They need huge grazing areas in your aquarium. Meaning lots o...

Re: Tank mates
Red Cherry Shrimps are a great pick as tankmates :D Like Chris said, I also tend to be very carefull with adding new dither fish, too. The risk of contaminating the breeders is high. However, almost all smaller tetras are compatible with plecos. They won't eat the eggs or hunt fry. At least not in m...

Re: Are catappa/Indian almond leaves good for L134's
I don't know what other leaves are available in Australias bio diversity. But there are a lot of trees that will offer usable leaves for plecos in europe. I use Walnut and Oak leaves for my fish. Just stay away from any toxic plants and only collect the leaves during autumn, after the trees dropped ...

Re: 2 Dead L236 in the same cave???
Sorry to hear that. Always a sad moment to find dead bodies :( I would go with Chuck's explanation. At least I had the same thought when I read your post. One of the reasons I like to have caves with two open ends on my juvenile and grow out tanks. Bamboo is great for this. Super cheap and efficient...

Re: Wave maker model and size.
My L134 live in a tank with quite little watermovement. They do fine. But a wavemaker is usually a great idea with plecos! I use Tunze Turbelle Nanostream pumps. A 6045 creates more than plenty of watermovement for a tank of your size. You can buy the smallest one 6015 and if you need more power you...

Re: L-134 tank setup (how many caves to use)
I have also found P. compta females may cave, but I have not seen this with my other pleco species. Females may overnight in a cave or hide there, but I have not seen them hold them the way I saw with my comptas. Strange. I find almost all of my pleco females like to hide in caves during day. With ...

I usually get more spawns in the winter period, too. Usually starting around december or january.
I thought it could be the increase in rainfall / snowfall and the correlating changes in atmospheric pressure?

Re: L-134 tank setup (how many caves to use)
My oppinion is, that you should always start out with at least as many caves as plecos. Usually 1.5-2 caves per pleco. (6 plecos = 9-12 caves) It is a false believe, that females would not like to have their own caves. So don't remove too many of the left over caves. When females feel comfortable in...

Just for a little add on. I move my fish between tanks without ever acclimating any. I never acclimate any fish, except for bigger differences in water temperature, which I basically acclimate within 1 minute from lower temp to higher temp. Going from higher temp to lower temp might need some more t...

Cut some 40mm pieces. shorter and longer ones. Will make 26 and 28mm caves for my smaller species. My Panaqolus claustellifer spawn in oak caves and it takes them about a year to chew through a 1cm thick wall. Yeah, these would be great, darrel, but they seem pretty hard to come by. At least in bigger quantitys. It's usually easy to get thinner pieces of any wood, but I need a thickness of at least 40mm, which usually comes with quite some higher expanses. On the other hand, while I used alderwood for tan...

I have not found a foolproof way to get these to spawn. They seem to be pretty random. I would offer a lot of structure and hiding places and possibilites for males to find their territories. I found to have way better results with only 1 male in a constrained tank of only 1m/160litre compared to ha...
