Re: Bloated Female Ancistrus

Welp, she's gone.

Here's an "autopsy" if anyone can figure what this is

Re: L168 Sexing

I hate to say it, but those all appear to be males to me. Sorry, Eric Yep, wasn't expecting much from that trip anyways. They are not being sorted at the source. It s the method of collection that radically skews the availability of females for many loricariids. Divers search crevices in stones and...

Bloated Female Ancistrus

My female BN is bloated for a few days now. I tried epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) for 24 hours and it didn't seem to have an effect. I tried again after doing a ~80% wc with raising the temp to 30C and still no effect. She is the only one bloated in the tank, I have a male and two L226's and a red ...

Now I think about it I remember throwing in some floating plants that might brought the snails with them.

Re: L168 Sexing

I have a good relation with that store so they let me sift through them for half an hour, I think they got all males. Please some one point me out if you spot one in the pics I was suspecting that this one (top right) was a female but I'm not sure https://i.ibb.co/R6pCqLK/IMAG1225.jpg https://i.ibb....

That would be the best case scenario, all the ones that are available are wild adults and I highly suspect that the females are sorted out at the source.

Re: L168 Sexing

Looks like two makes to me. Sorry, Eric Thanks for the quick reply Eric, BTW do know any ques to look for when looking for a female? But more importantly these are wild imports and I'm wondering if it's a common thing that the females get sorted before shipping? ie what are the chances of me findin...

Snails in Pleco Tanks

I've noticed a bunch of pond snails in my pleco tank which houses a few ancistrus, L226's and a Rineloricaria. I don't mind the snails much but would they be a concern to the fish since snails are a common vector for parasites? I haven't introduced any fish or plant in that tank for a very long time...

L168 Sexing

Hello, I just bought these 2 L168's in hope of them being a male and female. The only clue I went after was how "hairy" they were with males being hairier. The one one the right is the presumed male and the left is presumed female https://i.ibb.co/2ncR9GW/IMAG1213.jpg Closeup of "male...

There are many species that stay small. Check out the Cat-eLog, it has a neat tool that sorts species by size

Re: What's on my Bristlenose?

Sorry for the loss. I am still mad over my own dead pleco, which got killed last spring. How did you paint the tank? Describe the procedure. I have a feeling that the process of tank-painting severely terrified the fish, and instead of helping the fish it made things worse. just took a brush and so...

Re: What's on my Bristlenose?

Sorry about your loss. I don't think this fish had high chances to survive to begin with. When I first saw him and his infections I was pretty sure he would be dead in few days. So don't feel too bad about it. Nothing more you could have done to save him. Is this thing right next to his mouth a par...

Re: What's on my Bristlenose?

So guys the fish passed away... Here's what happened and I want your thoughts: At the time I'm writting this it's Thursday 10PM. So yesterday I came home late at night and found one of the fry dead with his odontodes flared out. So I started preparing water to do a wc in the morning, and I did an 80...

Re: What's on my Bristlenose?

So guys the fish is still alive but doesn't seem to be better. The skin on the pectorals is melting away and bone is showing. So till now I've done a 90% wc and reduced feeding by alot (were overfeeding the past few days). I dose with melafix about 1.5 the recommended dose daily, I also dose a littl...

Re: What's on my Bristlenose?

Also, Redrain, please don't put plecos in an illuminated bare bottom tank. It is just not fair for the plecos.. they want it dark, and the light gets reflected from all sites of the tank. There is no shade at all... I am not experienced with plecos, but judging from your tank pic I think that even ...

Re: What's on my Bristlenose?

I have to agree with Eric on this. A couple of things to note which makes me believe this. First, bristlenose prefer larger (more open) caves than most other plecos. Some species will outright refuse traditional tube type caves. This is likely the reason so much luck has been had with the coconut s...

Re: What's on my Bristlenose?

So I've removed the rock wool from the plants and rinsed them well. The whole coconut you see in the image have been hollowed out and I've had at least 3 or 4 successful spawns that happened right there, the male actually prefers it over stuff that I've offered in the past, so I removed them and kep...

Re: What's on my Bristlenose?

I am absolutley sure, that this was not a failed breeding attempt. And BN females do not hurt BN males... This is practically unheared of. Hi Jobro, I don't know how rare or common it is, but it happened with my ABNs and it happened with a pair of BNs in my friend's tank too. I think the initial wo...

I am absolutley sure, that this was not a failed breeding attempt. And BN females do not hurt BN males... This is practically unheared of. This fish is slowly rotting away. It is not the result of a fight but of some bacterial or chemical infections. And I'm afraid this fish may die soon. The fish ...

Re: What's on my Bristlenose?

For me the fish looks thin and short so I don't think it has had enough of food and or water quality. It may be so that you and I have totally different fish and that your don't grow as big. How big is he? I also think the wound could have come from a fail breeding attempt. One part was not ready f...

Re: What's on my Bristlenose?

Update: Ok so I managed to find 1 bottle of Melafix and I dosed the tank yesterday. Today he seems even less active than yesterday, plus the infected parts got red (on the fins) but the back seems to have gotten better. So I half dosed today. I don't know is it a phase they go through while healing?...

Re: What's on my Bristlenose?

Hi Redrain, The red marks look like wounds, either from fighting or a rough interaction if the male tried to mate with the female and she wasn't ready. If that was my fish, I wouldn't do too much. Biggest priority is clean water (I'd change 75%-80% of the water weekly during this time), lots of oxy...

What's on my Bristlenose?

so I was just writing a thread and it got deleted while refreshing.. Anyway, my male brislenose seems to have some sort of external infection. He also seems to be less active and have his fins clamped most of the time. Nothing has changed in the tank for along time. Tank is ~30 us gal, bare with som...
