Re: Feeding Repashy
I make my repashy in empty blister trays from frozen foods, which are about 1cm cubes. For adult plecs (about 5" long) I generally reckon an average of half a cube per day. Smaller fish (juveniles and otos) often prefer to eat off the surface of twigs and branches. Sometimes I dip twigs in the...

Re: Feeding Repashy
I feed more to the volume of the filtration and water volume, I think. I don't want to foul the water, but I want the fish to have all they want. If there's any left over after 12 hours, then I can reduce a bit for their next feeding. Barbie Interesting. I'd never think that the volume of the setup...

Re: Feeding Repashy
Bear in mind that each fish keeper will usually work out what works best for them. I batch Repashy in decent sized casserole dishes. When it has cooled I cut it into bars about 3.5x1.5x1 inch. I wrap each in wax paper and then most of it goes into the freezer and some into the fridge. When I feed I...

Feeding Repashy
I know many here feed Repashy, so I was wondering how you gauge the amount to feed. I usually make batches that I pour into silicone mini cube trays and store in the fridge. Each tray holds about 160 3/8" x 3/8" or roughly 1cm cubes. As a reference, in a tank with 6 L-129 at about 2" ...

Re: Opinions on this condition
As an update, so far the 172a seem to be improving as the dots look to be less prominent. They are also still eating. I did a 60% water change yesterday and dosed the Proform C, and another at roughly the same time again today. Both times I made sure to try and vacuum the sand. The temp is still sit...

Re: Opinions on this condition
The Proform C that I ordered showed up today. It contains those ingredients that you mentioned, so it appears to be the same. Because it is formulated for ponds, it requires a little math to figure out the dosage. They say 3.5 ounces per 1,000 gallons, so if my math is correct, that comes out to .1...

Re: Opinions on this condition
Looks like ich to me. Yellow would suggest velvet. But the treatment is the same for either. Everybody has their own favorite treatment. However, in general, the most effective ingredients are a mix of formaldehyde and malachite green. I have always used Quick Cure by Mardel. https://fritzaquatics....

Re: Opinions on this condition
Let me stress I'm not a vet, but such a bunch of amorvous dots looks like a virus to me Do you have any other Loricarids in the tank, and how are these doing? Virusses are most often rather specefic, that is, they only attack 1 or a few species, or 1 family or so. Anything sufficiently unrelated wi...

Re: Opinions on this condition
I suck at diagnosing disease, but obviously your fish have one. Not sure the significance of the yellow color to the dots. FYI, Proform C is a blend of formaldehyde, methanol and malachite green for its active ingredients. If you can find any other fish medicine that is close in formulation, you ma...

Opinions on this condition
So I recently acquired a couple of new groups of Leporacanthicus, L-264 and 172a(Heterodon), along with a singular L-018. The 264 are in their own tank, and although I lost 1 in the first week, the rest seem to show no outward signs of illness. They seem to be feeding(Repashy custome mixes) as I see...

Re: Oak leaves
Hi all, I don't know about the Black Oak ( Quercus velutina ), it isn't a tree I've ever seen in the UK, but you have a lot more Oaks in the USA. Looking at Wikipedia it says it is Red Oak group, and I've used Red Oak ( Quercus rubra ) leaves and they were OK (and a gorgeous colour), but didn't las...

Oak leaves
I've read about many using oak leaves in their tanks, and I have quite a bit around here. But I swore that somewhere I read something about black oak being no good. Does anyone know if that's the case? Also, what about silver Maple leaves, yea or nay? Sycamore?

Re: Behind a sponge filter?
Ok, I was having a hard time believing that they would spawn back there. I probably placed the sponge in just the right spot for the fry to hide because it is just the Swiss material on an old hydro base. I’m tempted to try and move it to see how many there are.

Behind a sponge filter?
I was doing water changes on a few tanks tonight and came across a nice surprise. Sometimes I will use some extra light to count and make sure all inhabitants are accounted for. When I was checking my L-129’s, I saw three or four 1/4-3/8” fry right behind a square Swiss tropicals sponge filter. Norm...

Re: Wood options
Most wood are safe for use..... Oak, Maple, Cherry, Beech, and yes Apple are all fine. Take care, Chuck Ok great thank you. As far as the harder woods, I would imagine they shouldn’t be used for the wood eaters like Panaqolus though correct? I use it in all of my tanks...… Panaqolus love it and so ...

Wood options
I was outside today putting a nice brisket on our smoker(could be an expensive experiment :d ) and I was adding some mesquite and apple chunks to the coals. At the moment I grabbed the apple, I wondered if it would be ok to use a few of those chunks in some of my pleco tanks. Most pieces do not have...

Re: Growing out different Hypans together
I have been using 33 longs for breeding groups of hypans for some time. I have breeding groups of between 7 and 12 fish in each- single species. I use 20 longs for growout. I would consider dividing a 33 long for growout depending the the size and number of fish. It would also work with two species...

Re: Growing out different Hypans together
Now that I've thought about it a little more, I think I am going to make a divider for the 33 long. I can use a piece of light diffuser with needle point mesh attached to make it, without flow to either side of the tank being affected. Then a separate 20 long can be used for a third group.

Re: Growing out different Hypans together
You would think that these three fish would be clearly different and easy to separate from each other. The potential problems happen when you decide to catch out a some of one kind. The stress this will cause in the tank as you remove decor and begin to chase the fish with a net is that this will m...

Growing out different Hypans together
I'm considering getting a few new Hypans in the coming weeks(L-129, 201, and 404), but they are not full grown yet by any means. So I was wondering, will growing them out together cause any issues as long as they are easily differentiated? My thought is to put them in a 33 long until they start to g...

Re: L-260 Fry Question
I have had the same experience as Eric. Once the fry have left the cave I've not seen any issues or conflict between the parents and young. In total my group have spawned about 6 times without issues. Awesome and thank you as well. I'll feel much more confident now introducing the 2 in the breeder ...

L-260 Fry Question
2 weeks ago I was blessed with my first Hypan spawn, L-260 :d . I have an ongoing breeding report with pics as they progress. From what I could tell there were 8-9 eggs in the cave. Shortly after they started to hatch, 2 eggs were either kicked out or wriggled out. I was able to recover them with my...

Re: Cotton ball like fungus on 260 pectoral.
Thank you for the info. I'm confident at this point that this is not an acute illness, and hoping that it's not a slow manifestation of a different strain. I'll continue on with a higher water change frequency and continue to monitor them. Right now, they show no external signs of any maladies, and ...

At the moment, I'm doing a 1/2 dose of both Pimafix and Melafix. Water change was done yesterday, and until I can get my hands on an actual med, I felt that this was better than nothing for now.

Re: Cotton ball like fungus on 260 pectoral.
Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'm keeping an eye on it for the moment and it hasn't gotten any worse. Not exactly the same issue but this thread about an issue with my L260's pectoral might help. In my case it appeared to be a breeding attempt which caused the injury rather than a fungus, but t...

Cotton ball like fungus on 260 pectoral.
I noticed that one of the wild L-260 I recently acquired has what looks to be a tiny cotton ball like growth on the end of one of its pectoral fins. I'm assuming it's some type of fungus. What is the consensus on treatment for something like this? At the moment, all I have on hand are mela and Pimaf...
