Re: Impostor clown pleco?

Ah, thanks. Well two of them have it, the third doesn't. I'm reasonably certain the one that doesn't is the first one I got from my friend. The other two came from big Al's. That's why I was wondering if the first may be a different kind. Maybe just a somewhat different genetic origin. Still looking...

Impostor clown pleco?

I've got 3 clown plecos, or so I thought. Im pretty sure their stripe patterns look near identical, but the tail fin on one of them is different. IMG_20190820_135827.jpg Naturally I just did a water change and they're all in their caves so I can't get full body shots. Is this a normal occurrence or ...

Re: Good week in the fish tanks

I sell them (check out my profile signature below my posts), donate some to my club, trade at LFS. With so many spawns, I do take good care of them, but I do not try to get 100% survival. But they are well fed; they do not need to snsck on each other. :)) I let them grow, then I clear out the tank....

That's awesome. And I expect you don't mind sharing your birthday with a few fish :p
Begs the question though; What do you do with all these spawns? Do you sell/rehome them, or do they snack on each other til a viable population density is achieved?

Re: Good week in the fish tanks

Lol, and here I am still waiting on my guppies to reproduce... (not that I actually want them to, but I've still got to make the effort to keep them happy. Or finally rehome the lot of them.)

Still looking for a male clown pleco. Somehow I'm thinking I may have better luck with those.

Re: Using sand as substrate

Trumpet snails will stir the gravel but they'll also take over the tank, and they'll eat cory eggs. I would NOT recommend trumpet snails. Cheers, Eric Good to know. I've only had the sand in there for about a month. Stirred it maybe once, here and there. If I run into issues, i may just have to re-...

Re: Using sand as substrate

I have about an inch of (pool filter) sand and not noticed any smells or bubbles. How long does it usually take for it to start doing that?
I've been meaning to get some trumpet snails to sift the substrate but not really a fan of snails. And if I add cories, the plecos will likely go on strike....

Lol. That's the extrovert, one of the juvies.
Makes me think they may all be girls though. None show clear odontodes, though big guy definitely is "furrier" than the littles.
Wouldn't that just be my luck.

Good reason to get two more though :-p

Re: Behaviour Change in Clown Pleco

Ha, added a large piece of wood with 5 caves drilled into it all around. And they've started playing musical caves. The big one has quit chasing the others away and one of the little ones has taken over his previously preferred cave.
This is fun to watch :-)

Never mind, that's just ancistrus ranunculus. The "aff". means it's likely related but not actually the same. Learn something new every day..

Did you say you read German?
http://www.l-welse.com/reviewpost/showp ... product/45

The "little frog" part apparently loosely translates into German and back to English as "tadpole pleco" :)
I think I need a bigger tank so I can get me some of these...

I'll have to look those up too.
I have a large mystery snail so assassins would probably just go slurp up that one rather than hunt down the tiny pond snails.
My guppies will eat the little snails if I crush them first. But finding those pests is a job and a half.

Yeah, turns out the basement wasn't an ideal place for prepping the driftwood. I pulled it out of the bleach water and it went mouldy the next day. Even with the smaller base size they should be fine! You can always do a condo style cave/wood/rock pile for them to hide in and still add more of the clowns and they would still be fine. Picture is of some condo caves I make for my fish just to give you a idea of what will work...… you can do rock...
