I would say L174 too, they can be quite variable in the pattern and not always spotted. They don't share the same location as L173 and is very rare both in nature as in the hobby, more rare than H. zebra in Xingu.

khrister, your fish is not the same as pleco22 even if they come from the same localities, your fish is what they call H. sp. "Gurupa". Typical colour is the greyish tone, not black and white or dark grey and white or any other colour... they are grey all over with a pattern, stubby and ro...

Re: Another Hypan ID request
This is what some call Hypancistrus sp. Gurupa or Gorupa, don't remember the spelling. Anyway, I have so far not seen any Hypancistrus from Amazonas river where this small village are located, I have seen these together with all other Hypancistrus I call H. sp. Lower Rio Xingu that comes from the sm...

Re: L-173b from Glaser
It's just a question of how/if you are able to read it. Mitochondrial DNA data might be too coarse an approach, and one may need to carry out a genome wide SNP scan to tease out the pattern. My opinion, this is Brazil and they need help but maybe don't want to ask for it. There are some good resear...

Re: L-173b from Glaser
In the end it is only the science of genetics which might answer these questions. But due to the time and money needed for such a project, I doubt it will ever be undertaken. Now that Brazil is getting ready to destroy the Xingu ecosystem and wipe out many of these fish in the wild, I fear that it ...

Janne, Its pretty easy for you to say that were not sold as 173b. But I still have the boxes they were shipped in and packing list. I didn't say that, I said I doubt that Glaser sold them as "L173b" because they should be more serious than that, however we all can make mistakes and so eve...

Re: L-173b from Glaser
They are not L173, some looks like L66 and others as L333 youngsters, the first 1-2-3 or so show deformities on their snout/head shape. When these are adults it will be much easier to tell if they are L66 or L333, i really doubt that these are bought from Glaser as L173b...

Will be difficult to export Scleromystax macropterus, they are in the Brazilian list of endangered species and not permitted to catch at all. For the whiptail I would go for Rineloricaria but have no clue which species, the Pimelodus if it has a stripe from head to tailfin it could belong to Pimelod...

Re: L287 or L066?
I agree with pleco22 that L287 is not a valid L-number, these belong to the complex of varities L399-L400 and what I call lower xingu. Even if your pictures of adults show a similar fin pattern as L66 I would not state they are this species, for me all these varities origin around Belo Monte is a co...

Rumours, if there are no truth fully source it's just stupid to spread rumours like this. I have been talking to a few people in the LFS Trade all have recived a letter or call regarding this "Ban" This would never happen, you mean that IBAMA will send an email to all retailers in England ...

Re: How to sex big Panaque species
Both sex get long cheek odontodes, females get a little smaller on the pectoral fins. I would go for the shape of body, lenght of snout and the shape of the anal fins, if they are in good condition and you have both sexes you would be able to see the differencies in the overall shape. Males longer s...

Re: Attempts to breed L14
Using Coralia for current 10-12.000 L/h is like to use a powerhead of 2-3000 L/h, they just move around the water a little with some waves on the surface. 35.000L/h sounds much but everything depends on what type of pumps in use, if this volume would be created by one large pond pump the water would...

The eggs often hatch a little to early when removed and the fry are very tiny just a little larger then a Sturisoma fry, the yolksac is consumed within a few days (2-3) and their first food must be very small. Scobinancistrus aureatus is widely spread in Rio Xingu, at least down to Sao Felix do Xingu and will not be affected as much like small local endemic species living in the big bend. It will be affected in some way but it's more difficult to foresee then it's with species you know only occur on a cer...

I hope you have eggs from Lamontichthys llanero, maybe you can't exclude Loricaria simillima and Loricaria sp. `Rio Atabapo, they are lip brooders but they lay their eggs like you describe; not exactly as single layer but 1/2" wide and around 2" long as a flat mass of eggs. Loricaria simil...
