When you say water changes, how much are you changing in each tank each time?

Hi Eupterus
Do you have any way to monitor the oxygen level of your aquarium? Are the giardinus and mosquito fish mostly surface dwellers? If the oxygen level dropped during the night because of all the plants, it might explain why they survived and the bottom dwelling plecos didn't make it. Aside ...

There is a pair of L287 for sale right now on Aquabid - it's another picture to compare if nothing else.

I would go with my original ID and say it is L287. It matches them most closely, an importer is selling fish identified as L287, and so far there is no solid evidence that L287 don't exist. You got a darn good deal there Oscar300.

Hi Buzz
If you are only in the second week of cycling a new set-up, you may have triggered an ammonia spike (smelly water) with the water change. A brand new system should take around 6 weeks to stabilize and water changes during that time should be avoided altogether if possible. You have a heavy ...

Hi Caribou
S. angelicus can be really snotty with each other. As long as you have lots of hiding places like logs and caves, they should be able to pick out their own little territory and be alright. I've kept 3 in a 70 gallon tank with no murder and not too much mayhem, although they did chase each ...

Just curious if you have chlorinated water that you added to the tank? I have topped off tanks without removing the chlorine   and none of my fish showed any response except the S. angelicus - and they really didn't like it! Needless to say, I dechlorinate even a small amount of water ...

Hi Cabazon
Are the red spots like dots on the body or more like red streaking around the fins and tail. Sounds like maybe a bacterial infection has set in. Can you check your water parameters for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate to see if maybe the ich medication crashed your biological filter?

The strange thing is that you had a nitrate increase, along with the ammonia, shortly after a water change. ANY chance at all that there is a decaying plant, fish, chunk of uneaten food, or something that you missed that may be causing the problem?

I worked at a pet store for a few years and I'll never forget the lady who came in to buy some tetras but she was leery because the fish in her aquarium killed any new fish she tried to introduce. When I asked what type of fish she already had (expecting her to say african cichlids or oscars or ...

Have you been able to check ammonia and nitrite levels? With no substrate or filter media you may be constantly cycling the tank when you do water changes.

Thanks Jools. The reason I ask is that I have read (but can't verify) that P. aurantiacus is collected from the Rio Tocantins and L056 is collected from the Rio Araguari(?).
If that's true and if all of the chubby/rubber plecos collected in the Araguari are brown/black, they are probably a different ...

Is L056 collected in the same place as Parancistrus aurantiacus? I can't seem to find much information on the L056.

sand substrate - internal filter

Hi
Yeah, I've burned out a few Aqua Clears when sand gets up the intake tube and into the impeller :x For a 10 gallon tank you might want to try a Duetto internal filter - the DJ100 model has a good flow for a small unit and the impeller is pretty well protected from debris. You should be able to ...

Hi
I think that you are on the right track by tearing the tank down, rinsing everything and starting over completely. Soap residue in the gravel bed would take a long time to filter out and probably end up crashing the system anyway. Did your survivors go into an established aquarium or do you have ...
