Have you performed any water testing? It may be worth taking a sample into an Aquarium Outlet, and have them test it for you ...

I've read that the the sand used in Swimming pool filters is a good smooth sand for Cory's.

Has anyone else heard the same?

Does it startle when you approach?

My Tetra's don't seem to disturb much when the Cory's do their surface run tho'. And I've had the Cory's flip other fish out of the tank.

You need to look at the surface area of the bio-medium. Essentially you need living space for the beneficial bacteria to set up shop.

Just from my own observations of media I've sighted, the pores of the volcanic rock sort of thing provide much more area than the plastic bio-balls ...

Your budget may play a huge role in selecting your species. $100 would get you a nice collection of Bristlenose & Cory's. But your basic Plec's are going to begin at $30-40 a head, and really soar from there, depending on availability.

Although I have noticed a cycle in behaviour. There will be times during the day when you won't see any of them (I've about 60). An hour later they're all out and at it, as if it's feeding time.

I can't help you with microworms, I can't find anywhere that sells them.

I feed my Cory fry liquid, or powdered food, usually the latter.

Have you tried grinding regular food with a Mortar and pestle?
