Well, I have 11 of them! I swear, I see them eating eggs, and then I look, and I see more! Now that they started, they should be good from now on. Production will slow in my 55 (plecos!) But I'd bet a few will survive in there too :) My attempt at removing them resulted in fungused eggs, so i'm glad...

I've felt around all my sponges and powerheads looking for something that could have been mauling my Bloodfins. I found nothing at all that i could feel with my hand, so I must assume (at this point) that I bought defective fish. Pulled a 2nd dead one out today. Lets hope that its the last one. It w...

Fry eating
My bronze cories laid eggs! Unfortuantely, I was going to set my tank up as a saltwater tank next week, nothing like fish to change your plans. I moved some to a holding device, but left more than half in the tank. Those have not been eaten. Providing any hatch (seems highly infertile this time)will...

I went with the rather common bloodfin tetra. I have a thing for red fins on a shiny silver fish. (My 75 is stocked with tinfoils, although I think i should replace them with a smaller species at some point Buenos Aires or Redhooks.) But there seems to be a problem! I found one dead, missing part of ...

Cory: Bronze. Plain, brown, not breeding, but whatever :) Pleco: Rubbernoses (although I need a Goldie at some point!) Other: Golfballs. I mean striped raphaels. Gluttons who keep my convict population in check, although they may be getting too good. Big fish. SA Red Tail. No where to put one, but I...

Well, right now, the most likely tank is the 33 long. I was thinking of keeping blockheads (Steatocranus casuarius) since they seem rather docile, and grow to around 4inches. Males are rumored to reach 7, but, that should take a while if it ever did. They do appear to like somewhat warmer water thou...

River tank: Tankmates
Since this is not specifically catfish, I will put it here. I'm looking to build my rubbernoses a river tank, but can not really decide on any tankmates. It needs not be a biotope, but I dont want things being blown around, or really out of place. 20 long, 33 long (48x 12 inches, but shorter than th...

That doesnt actually work too well. In the countertop trade, any large grained rock tends to be called granite. Granites, are white and black, and sometimes pink. The black countertops are usually a differnt rock. I need to find some of my links, but searching for granite, or rock types should get y...

At 7 inches they are getting too big for the 38. While the heat would make them grow better, the size, and nutrient buildup could stunt them. So, outside they would go, if they were mine :) They do make some very large, 100+ gallon rubbermaid containers that you could heat though, another option for...

Dilute HCl is the best test, but most people dont have that laying around the house. Vinegar might not react with all rocks containing carbonates (ie mixed carbonates and lots of sand) though. Livebearers might like the higher pH actually, but the cories might not. My pH was 8 over the summer, and I...

White edging might indicate Species 2 from the catelog. It will be interesting to see these grow. 3 are at 1.5 inches with a larger one nearer to 2. Will the pelvic fins grow in? On a fish or two, they look slightly longer, but not to the clownish proportions as seen in the more common species in th...

Very possible. I hope not, i want 4! of a one of a kind species ;) Mine could be so light colored because if the very light substrate I have. Its a very fine silica, very light tan, as you can see. I have never, even when i had just tossed them in the tank, seen them as dark as bronzefry's. Do any o...

Are there any other species of white spotted chaetostoma? besides: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/chaetost/917_f.php I purchased a small fellow (or gal?) to help with some algea, before it will go into the river tank that I am still planning. When I got it home, i realized its spots w...

I had a good feeling it was a Plecostromus, but I didnt have a digital camera for a while. I was pointing out that I didnt think it was a Pardalis since they seem to be the common common onces. Unfortuantly this guy has leveled off at around 7 inches for a while. He was stuck in a 26 for far too lon...

If I were to do that, that is almost a standard 10 gallon, which I was assured would not work and create a directional current. And the size is the limiting factor, I have a 20 long, but i can not use it due to school regulations. They may not notice, but it wouldnt be fun if they did. 11 inches tal...

Custom tank
I really want to do this river tank with a pair of Chaestomas. The problem my college has a rather draconian 10 gallon rule. The obvious answer is a custom acrylic tank of 10 gallons. The way to keep the tank low on gallonage is to go with a low height. How low can I build this without running into ...

Bronze cory breeding
I know tank raised bronze cories are not terribly sensitive even when breeding, but I just ran my pH test for the first time since summer. My nice 7.4 pH is now 8.4. Can any harm come of this? This just seems a bit more extreme than I've heard of before. Mine are still probably too young and small (...

After wanting one for 2 years now, I finally bought a tank big enough to fit one. Its a 75gal (48x18) with a pleco and eventually tiger barbs and a Jack Dempsey. He should be spiney and nocturnal enough to be ok. I need to add more rockwork and caves, but there will be plenty before I got either the...

Does anyone think this would work with a 10 gal? The current would be less directional of course, due to the square-er dimensions. I would use a small powerhead fed through some sponges so it would be a high flow rate filter. How much flow would be too much for a 2 or 3 rubbernoses? Could those bree...

Looking for a Pim
Well, I really like RTCs but they get big. I'm in no position for a 500- 1000 gallon tank (or pond) to even start keeping one happy. The thing that really hooked me was a small "kitten" begging for food at the LFS. Not many fish do that. Is there a smaller species that exhibits similar beh...

2 things come to mind. 1. The two bulbs are just too bright. If its bright enough, I'd assume just about anything could see it. Try and work with one, or put them on the otherside of the room. Dimmer is still better. 2. This goes along with BK's post. Incandecent red lights, are not (apparently) a v...
