Re: What kind of Hypancistrus? L173 fry update
Hi, nice specimen, indeed. So get a female and breed them. And you will see that the offspring won't look like this fish. The marking is a doubtful characteristic. The DATZ 7/2009 shows the complete offspring of one pair of the "real" L 173. Problem is: You will find a picture of the male,...

Re: What kind of Hypancistrus? L173 fry update
Hi, It is unprovable that someone breed the "real" L 173, because even the status of the first picture is unclear. Don't throw bricks when you live in a glass house. Unfortunately many of the breeders I know doesn't understand this and blame each other for producing hybrids. So please don'...

Re: What kind of Hypancistrus? L173 fry update
Hi, that is the problem: Perhaps they are both L 173 - or hybrids between different variants with wavy lines. No one knows for sure. But mixing both types of L 173 with each other will again rise the risk of hybrids. That what I say. Keep the lines clear. Don't use exceptional looking fish for breed...

Re: What kind of Hypancistrus? L173 fry update
Hi, sorry to say but this thread is typical for a really bad situation. First: The status of L 173 is not clear. When the DATZ introduced L 173 ist was like ever. A single picture, with no catching location and a really bad description. Sorry to say, but all the mess starts with the L-Number 173. Pr...

Re: Hypancistrus hybrid
Hi, uhhh, that's not easy. At first you should really check your dealer. Seems to me, that all of the fish are sold under a wrong name. I see: - L 411 a nice male - some L 129 , wich are often sold as L 340, but I think they are not - some small H. contradens - and some really nice Xingu Variants (L...

Re: My L129 tank
Hi,
nice setup. But please remember. Breeding Hypancistrus in such a small tank has many risks. If you habe to feed the fry, water conditions could get worse very quickly. L 129 is easy to bread, but I think the tank is a little bit too small.

Hi, I have seen some L 129 x H. contradens hybrids. They really look like your fish. This could happen, but should not. Just keep him well and avoid further crossbreeding. And please keep in mind, that buying the strangest marking fish out of 10 could always lead to problems. (or to l 236, just joki...

Re: Hypancistrus debilittera vs L340
Hi, it's not easy to identify them, but in my opinion couting the teeth doesn't help: Dentary teeth four to six, long and wide with cusps of equal length and width in worn teeth (lateral cusp slightly shorter in new ); premaxillary teeth 11–14, fairly wide (but not as wide as dentary teeth) and shor...

Re: Hypancistrus ID
Hi, in this situation l 260 and l 411 will show a typical stress pattern including the loss of contrast. This fish looks like L 66, body shape leads in the same direction. But the caudal fin is a little bit different to L 66. The small one also looks not very typical. But perhaps the mother is anoth...

Re: A very nice yellow based Hypancistrus sp.
Hi,
First - I wish, that you will find a female with the same marking and body shape. And I keep my fingers cross. The yellow color could disappear. So search the internet and ask your local dealer.
But even if you find a fitting female the danger of unwanted hybridisation will be high.

Re: A very nice yellow based Hypancistrus sp.
Hi, @Janne This is very close to what I think about the situation of Xingu-Hypancistrus. In my opinion, L 236, L 173, L 287, L 345, L 399/400 and many other Hypancistrus without L-Numbers (all the Belo Monte stuff) are different kinds of transition forms between the common "species" like L...

Hi, if you use my photoshop-trick with the original picture from the DATZ (I won't post it because of copyright reasons) you will get a pattern that many of the "real" L 236 have in Germany. I have heard, that some snakes shows this kind of negative-pattern effect as an aberration. @ Janne...

Hi, @Janne: changing the proportions or body shape of a fish ist only possible in one direction (for optical reasons): - long to short - flat to fat but not the way around! Hi, it is a nice Hypancistrus, but in my opinion it has nothing to do with L 236. Body shape is L 333, coloration and pattern could be an aberration. The original picture of L 236 published in the DATZ in Germany shows a flat an elongated Hypancistrus (more L 66/400) type. http://www.datz.de/Artikel...

Hi, nice fish. Body shape differs from the Xingu types. It has a longer forehead and shorter fins. Reminds me at Hypancistrus debilittera (Armbruster, Lujan & Taphorn, 2007) . Old males could look like this. Coloration is of course very different from Hypancistrus debilittera (Armbruster, Lujan ...

Hi,
I love this pattern! Body shape looks like L 400 / L 399 / L 66 and even L 287. The pattern is untypical for all of this Variants. I have seen lots of Xingu-Type fry, but never such a pattern. This fish is too young to identify.
Please post pictures, when it is adult, would be interesting...

Hi, sorry my page is broken, seem to need some specialists to fix that ;-) If you are not sure, that your L 236 are "real" , I don't think, naming them L 345 is a good idea. There are some different lines of L-236, and many of them don't show this rare white variants. Some of them do, but ...

Hi, in the first picture it looks like a deformation, but I think I'm wrong. The rest is OK. Like other Hypancistrus, L 333 includes several different variants, including different body colour and patterns. Mixing different sources of fish increases the risk of hybrids. The status of L 333 is just a...

Hi,

Hi, this is L 174. Very different to L 173. And very rare to the market, because many breeders don't breed L 174. This is the slowest growing Hypancistrus. Small L174 are very beautyfull, adult ones looks sometimes like a grey toothbrush ;-) This is L 174: http://chromapark.de/apps/client/guder_f/cr...

Hi,
on the first view: both males. The pattern of one fish reminds me of L 411. If they are tankbreed, this could be a hybrid. Please be carefull with this rare Pleco and avoid any hybridisation. L260 could be the fist variant wich will disappear.
