Re: Pleco deaths

I would assume there is a connection between plecos and shrimp both affected. Copper would be a thought except it should probably affect the snails as well. If your house is new as in recently built, the odds are decent it has PVC plumbing which would make copper from pipes not a worry. The same wou...

Re: Using deep gravel and bacteria to control nitrogen

I have one problem generalizing from waste water studies which find Nitrobacter is the dominant nitrite oxidizer. The one thing I think has been established beyond any doubt is that Nitrobacter is not found in any meaningful level, if found at all, in aquariums. It is suited to oxidizing higher leve...

Re: Using deep gravel and bacteria to control nitrogen

Here is what Tropica says about the heudelotti: Bolbitis comes from West Africa, a fern with very beautiful transparent green leaves, 15-40 cm tall and wide. When planting do not cover the rhizome because it will rot, and it is best to plant Bolbitis heudelotii on a root or stone. Keep the plant in ...

We have had a whole house backup generator since 2012. We have two buildings each of which has 100 amp max capacity. Out gennie is a Generac which can put out a bit less than 200amps. It is our second machine as out first one had a major component fry the week before a blizzard was forecast. The par...

Re: Any interest in a documenting of my summer breeding related project

A quick note with no pics. I had pulled a cave with an RB Line L236 dad on wigglers to half of a divided 33 gal. long. The fry were out a few days ago and today I returned the cave and dad to the breeder tank and did maint. and a water change on the 33 gal. I had seen only two fry so far, so I decid...

Re: Brazil rides again- and we all suffer....

Mother Nature isn't here to protect us. She will overcome and adapt. We may not be around to see it though. As far as I am concerned this is not a question of "may." For some time I have believe that the human race is doomed to extinction as species on this planet. From the dawn of life on the plan...

Re: Brazil rides again- and we all suffer....

I stand corrected re the oxygen part of things. However, I am not sure that I have the co2 part that wrong? What makes things different now than in the past decades isn't that there have not been more acres burned in past years, but that those burned acres are becoming and increasing percent of the ...

It looks like P R dodged a bullet. The storm seems to have unexpectedly turned north and will only brush P R. The Virgin Islands are going the get slammed and then the current predicted track looks like it will hit central Florida as a category 3 hurricane.

While I will not be attending, some of my fish will be. Jorge G. of Nation Wide Aquatics will be selling my fish and he also ships. He will for sure have some 173 offspring at the event.

I wish it was not so far from me or I would come myself. I am sure I will be missing a great weekend :YMSIGH:

Re: Any interest in a documenting of my summer breeding related project

I am going nuts. We got hit by lightning and lost a cable box, a TV and 1/2 of our router. I have been running around getting new equip and hooking it up. I spent all day Sat. into the night pulling the fry from the 173 breeding tank. I had to send somebody pictures so I can post some stuff re that ...

Re: Any interest in a documenting of my summer breeding related project

I have a camera full of pictures I can't seem to get downloaded and edited so I can post them. But I could not wait for them to post this info. Part of he summer plan was to move the offspring from my breening group of wild L173 to a larger grow tank, I had them in a 20L and then the 33L breeder ta...

Re: Brazil rides again- and we all suffer....

The Brazilian rain forests have been referred to as lungs. If I have it correct, all the co2 produced in Brazil has historically been consumed within Brazil and did not contribute to global warming. Additionally, about 20% of the worlds oxygen is produced there as well. There is a massive amount of ...

Re: Has anyone seen this before?

Two thoughts here and neither may be correct. First, it may be from fighting. Second, it could be natural fading caused by stress or because of aging. I have seen this sort of thing on older plecos, especially the ones which are darker to start. Check out these two older L260s. https://photos.smugmu...

No wave makers. I have used a variety of filters in my pleco tanks over the years. This includes power filters, sponge/Poret foam filters both air and pump driven, powerheads with large intake sponges and canisters. I have been moving away from the power filters, pumps and power heads to more air dr...

Brazil rides again- and we all suffer....

Not content to trash the rivers in the Amazon and all the bad things this has done, now the Amazon rain forests are burning at an unprecedented rate. Much of this is exacerbated by the "non-existent" climate change. Who needs living rivers, who need rain forests, who needs native peoples, who needs ...

I have pics. Not the greatest but if the saying, a picture is worth 1,00 words, these which will appear in this thread are worth about 400 to 500 words. :-p These are the six terrace tanks. Shooting out there is not easy as there are reflections in the glass But this should give an idea of the layou...

Re: Good week in the fish tanks

I sympathize with the your problem of becoming overstocked when many fish are in spawning mode. I have allowed fewer babies to survive as well. For me it was more of an issue of not being on social media and not having a site from which to sell. I also am trying to cease shipping fish as well. I bel...
