Today was the first day in a few months where, in England, we have been allowed to leave home without it being for one of a few defined reasons.
I took the opportunity to trade in 70 juvenile S. barbatus, and 41 Moenkhausia sp. Kogal yellow, which I have been raising over the past few months for ...

Congratulations on getting accepted to the course, and thanks for the update, I remember reading your thread in 2014 asking about further education in this field!
Good luck I hope it goes well and you are able to find a job which you enjoy.

Re: When can I tell the sex of my blue phantom im getting tomorrow
Good to hear it's settled in well. In my experience they are slow growers, at least in captivity, I'd guess it's be a couple years before you could take a guess at the sex. I've not kept them singily before, so I'm not sure if that'd impact ability to sex them.

Re: Catfish Cataclysm
Hi Eric,
If the reports I've read are accurate it looks like sometime in June I'd get the first dose, I believe in the UK we are still waiting around 12 weeks between doses, so sometime in September maybe for the second dose.
Fingers crossed things go smoothly and we can travel to events soon

Good to see it's able to go ahead, not sure what international travel will be like then, I'd like to be there but will wait until closer to the time before I book anything.

Re: Fry Video
Agree on the daily water changes, and multiple feedings, that's what it took for me to raise a decent number of S. barbatus recently, 3 feeds a day, they are still on at least 2 feeds a day, often 3 if I remember, at 3+ months after hatching.

Nice setup, I'm sure you are aware, but thought I'd mention, keep an eye on the food if it's getting wet after dipping the pipette in. It could get moldy quite quickly.
Good luck raising them.

Looking good Eric, lets hope the owner of that store doesn't keep thinking, these Microglanis are top sellers, I'd better get more in, or you may need to start filling sinks, and baths to keep them in!

A few updates.
Unfortunately as expected the H. inspector eggs didn't make it, they looked good for a few days, then there was a mass of egg casings kicked out of the cave, 3 or 4 eggs were still intact, but within 24 hours of me trying to raise them they were covered in fungus.

That is an issue I have with 'sustainable seafood' for the past 10 + years I've not eaten any seafood at all, as I find it hard to believe any is truly sustainable at the current rates of harvest.

Re: Blue Phantom (L128)
Just a quick follow up, my F1 male was at the front of the tank earlier, so I managed to get a picture showing the odentode growth on a 4 year and 3 month old fish, when holding a tape measure up to the glass, it measured 4.25 inches SL and 5.5 inches TL, that's approximate as it was a few inches ...

Similar to Shane's comments, one of my males has recently developed large odentodes, he is ~5 inches TL.
Luckily, as the fish is from one of my spawns I know exactly how old it is, I first saw the large odentodes when the fish was 4 years and 3 months old, which was just a few weeks ago.

Great to hear a bit of good news!
Despite a little success with other species recently, I still struggle to get any Loricariidae to spawn, let alone get any young to survive!
Maybe this is the year!

Size is a consideration too, if I were to re-do my fish room, I would seriously consider contacting a welder as Shane mentions, having thinner box section steel between, and at either end of the tanks will either give you more room to work between/above/around the tanks or reduce the overall height ...

I have had a few of this species, and apart from mature males reliable sexing can be difficult.

You certainly have a male!
Unknown 2 could be a female, but it's very tricky, for me at least, to tell from photos.
They all look healthy, you have some caves, now the waiting starts, hopefully one day you'll see eggs, then you can be sure one of them is a female!

Re: Breeding Corydoras(ln9) Loxozonus, "Dirty Bandit Cory"
That's a good point, I have never kept them in a tank with any significant vegetation, nor added a spawning mop. @Tensack some sort of spawning mop would be worth a go. In the past (with other species) I've had success when I've made them from acrylic 'wool' used for knitting.
