Re: Catfish Cataclysm

Good to see it's able to go ahead, not sure what international travel will be like then, I'd like to be there but will wait until closer to the time before I book anything.

Re: Fry Video

Agree on the daily water changes, and multiple feedings, that's what it took for me to raise a decent number of S. barbatus recently, 3 feeds a day, they are still on at least 2 feeds a day, often 3 if I remember, at 3+ months after hatching. I'm sure I've had that food before, maybe in a sample sac...

Re: Fry Video

Nice setup, I'm sure you are aware, but thought I'd mention, keep an eye on the food if it's getting wet after dipping the pipette in. It could get moldy quite quickly.

Good luck raising them.

Looking good Eric, lets hope the owner of that store doesn't keep thinking, these Microglanis are top sellers, I'd better get more in, or you may need to start filling sinks, and baths to keep them in! :))

Looking good, keep the updates coming. I like the look of all the wood in the tank, will make some nice hiding places for the fish.

Re: Marc's fish room build

A few updates. Unfortunately as expected the H. inspector eggs didn't make it, they looked good for a few days, then there was a mass of egg casings kicked out of the cave, 3 or 4 eggs were still intact, but within 24 hours of me trying to raise them they were covered in fungus. Thanks for the update Eric, these have been a fish I have wanted to keep for a while, just need a convention or two to move on some fry/fish to make the room!

Re: Is it ethical to export old fish?

That is an issue I have with 'sustainable seafood' for the past 10 + years I've not eaten any seafood at all, as I find it hard to believe any is truly sustainable at the current rates of harvest. The definition of sustainable, at least in this sense, is something which is able to be maintained with...

Re: Marc's fish room build

Hi RobinSm89, welcome to PlanetCatfish! I bought all the materials, mainly the timer and screws, from DIY stores and builders merchants, similar places to a Home Depot or Lowes. I just had to go around a few of them to make sure I was picking out straight timber! To get that much timber wasn't cheap...

Re: Blue Phantom (L128)

Just a quick follow up, my F1 male was at the front of the tank earlier, so I managed to get a picture showing the odentode growth on a 4 year and 3 month old fish, when holding a tape measure up to the glass, it measured 4.25 inches SL and 5.5 inches TL, that's approximate as it was a few inches ba...

Re: Marc's fish room build

Hi everyone, after posting in another thread that I haven't had luck spawning Loricariidae, this morning my male Hypancistrus inspector is sat on eggs! I noticed last night he was trapping the female, so after water changes this morning I checked the caves, they swapped caves in the night, but there...

Re: Blue Phantom (L128)

Similar to Shane's comments, one of my males has recently developed large odentodes, he is ~5 inches TL. Luckily, as the fish is from one of my spawns I know exactly how old it is, I first saw the large odentodes when the fish was 4 years and 3 months old, which was just a few weeks ago. In the wild...

Great to hear a bit of good news!

Despite a little success with other species recently, I still struggle to get any Loricariidae to spawn, let alone get any young to survive!

Maybe this is the year!

Re: Aquarium rack

Size is a consideration too, if I were to re-do my fish room, I would seriously consider contacting a welder as Shane mentions, having thinner box section steel between, and at either end of the tanks will either give you more room to work between/above/around the tanks or reduce the overall height/...

Re: When can I tell the sex of my blue phantom im getting tomorrow

I have had a few of this species, and apart from mature males reliable sexing can be difficult. As I'm not sure on the size of fish you are getting tomorrow, I'll let you know my experiences, firstly when i have kept a group, as is common with lots of species, there appears to be an alpha male, who ...

Those overlapping pictures are due to the browser not using the latest files from the site (specifically, the style sheets). A hard refresh will fix it. This error was introduced late December, as part of some changes to make videos responsive (look good on mobiles) - videos in the clog, forum and ...

Hi Everyone, it's been a while but I have had a bit of spawning success I thought I'd share. My Scleromystax barbatus have been spawning every week as I have let the temperature drop by 2-3c in the fish room over the winter. When leaving the eggs, they slowly disappear, I suspect a combination of th...

You certainly have a male!

Unknown 2 could be a female, but it's very tricky, for me at least, to tell from photos.

They all look healthy, you have some caves, now the waiting starts, hopefully one day you'll see eggs, then you can be sure one of them is a female!

Did you add any medication at all or just lots of fresh water?

Re: Breeding Corydoras(ln9) Loxozonus, "Dirty Bandit Cory"

That's a good point, I have never kept them in a tank with any significant vegetation, nor added a spawning mop. @Tensack some sort of spawning mop would be worth a go. In the past (with other species) I've had success when I've made them from acrylic 'wool' used for knitting.

I had to go and count them, to be honest I've not paid much attention to them recently! Firstly welcome to Planet Catfish! I have had a group of these since April 2016, they have never shown any spawning behaviour unfortunately. Other Cory species I have kept have spawned fairly frequently, with the exception of loxozonaus and C123. No idea why, they are all kept in the same water and ...

I've kept blue phantoms for several years, and never noticed the characteristic sawdust waste, that I see from my Panaqolous. As a side note my Pseudorinelepis sp(l095) do seem to ingest and pass a lot of wood, when I catch them on the large pieces of Oak in their tank they do seem to be lazily graz...

Re: Typhoons - Did shipping cause this??

That's great news, other than being malnourished I guess they had no other issues, e.g. internal parasites, in my limited experience, which has been with more omnivorous fish, if they looked that bad they didn't make it.

Good luck with them!
