Re: Marc's fish room build

They are wrigglers now, but plenty of yolk left! They are warm too, usually 29-30c (84-86f)!

The development does seem to have accelerated, so I'm guessing just a couple days of yolk left.

Re: Marc's fish room build

Yeah he seemed to be doing such a good job for the first 5 days or so!

Some pictures of the egg development below 6 and 8 days after the spawn. Once I move them to a larger container i'll get some better pictures :-).

Re: Marc's fish room build

The rescued inspector eggs are doing OK, I have 4 young developing well so far, and starting to show pigment now. Unfortunately it seems that the male has eaten the eggs/wrigglers which remained in the cave. Next time I'll take the eggs and raise them myself. I'll add pictures when at my pc, struggl...

Re: New here and could use some advice

Sounds like a frustrating situation if you want to keep South American fish. I'm not sure I can recommend any pleco for that water myself, I do see bristlenose (Ancistrus), especially the common types such as Ancistrus cf_cirrhosus , in tanks with cichlids and livebearers often, they could be an opt...

Re: Marc's fish room build

Thanks Eric and Mark. Unfortunately all the parallelus eggs have fungused, they were all 2-5cm or more apart and all fungused independently overnight. Next time I'll collect them and split between a few different containers to experiment a little. Also, all but 2 of the Sturisomatichthys eggs went b...

Re: New here and could use some advice

One thing I forgot to mention earlier, try filling a glass with your tap water and leaving it overnight then test the pH again. In some areas (in the UK at least) water companies put additives into the water to raise the pH, at least partially in case there is any lead piping in the network. The hig...

Re: New here and could use some advice

Hi, Do you have access to a TDS meter? They are relatively inexpensive ~$15, that will give a bit more information about the makeup of your water, if the TDS number is below say 300ppm, then your water may not be quite as bad as you think. Other thoughts: - Have you got any local fish stores, you co...

Re: Marc's fish room build

I have had a bit more luck with spawns over the past few days, i'm assuming partly due to a storm which passed over the weekend. On Sunday my Hypancistrus inspector spawned, having been trapping for 24 hours, I've just been to check and one egg was kicked out, but the rest still appear to be good wi...

Re: Non tangle catfish net ? Suggestions ?

I've seen the rubber mesh landing nets you mention, and I've thought they'd be a good option. The one concern I have though is with the typically larger mesh size, larger, but not huge, e.g. 6 to 12 inch fish, may get their whole head stuck in the mesh rather than just a fin. Similar to the way a gi...

Thanks Two Tank, although the rain water was very low in TDS, ~5 ppm, as it was so cold I only did a small water change with it.

For my next attempt I'll warm it up before doing a water change with it and go for a much larger change!

Re: 13 spawns in 6 weeks: It doesn't get much better than this (for me, anyway... oh wait, it does-17 spawns in 8 weeks)

Wow, good work Eric! Not sure on the L052 fry deaths i have had a lot of unexplained fry deaths in the past without obvious cause. Possibly the flow is too much in that tank, could they be using up more energy than they are able to consume? As a side note, after my attempt to trigger spawns with col...

Re: Hello all

Welcome to Planet Catfish! Take a look around the Cat-eLog, if you see anything you like click the heart shaped image at the top of the page to add to your wishlist. That is a very helpful feature for me, so I don't forget all the interesting fish I stumble across which I 'have' to keep at some poin...

Re: 13 spawns in 6 weeks: It doesn't get much better than this

You have been doing great with spawns recently Eric! I haven't had any in a while, so at lunch I did (for the first time) several cold ~6-8c pure rain water changes ~30% to try and trigger spawns as we have had a few storms pass through in the past week. I've done this to the following tanks: Ancist...

Re: Dark discolouration on an L128

Thanks for reporting back. That's only the third report I've heard of them becoming much lighter, when I noticed it happening to one of my young I was concerned, but it doesn't seem to be anything to worry about.

Good luck with them!

Re: Dark discolouration on an L128

Hi, I've kept a few L128 over several years, small and large. But not noticed darker blotches before, I have had one of my small fish go much lighter for a week or so, then change back to normal very quickly. I wouldn't be too worried, just keep an eye on it and report back if it changes. Good luck ...

Re: Marc's fish room build

Bad news unfortunately, the eggs did well for 2-3 days in the tumbler, longer than my previous attempts with other eggs, but they eventually got a fungus. There was no noticeable development, and as the eggs were at least 4 days old before they started to fungus I'm assuming they weren't fertilised....

Re: Marc's fish room build

The eggs were gone when I just checked. After looking around I found the remaining eggs, only 4 surrounded by empty shells. They are now in a tumbler, but there are no obvious signs of development yet.

Thanks Eric, I'll update in a few days, maybe a week if I'm lucky, and they develop well and hatch!
