Re: My Public Aquarium: exhibit blues - how to make them?
Thanks Milton. I looked at their webpage - nice place. Small update, Dec 15, 2011: a month ago or so, I ordered (1) two 13'x'13'x4.5' (outside dimensions; inside ~4500 gal) semi-square tanks from Dolphin Fiberglass Products. One 8'x4'x2.5" acrylic window (7.5'x3.5' visible area) per tank. $15,0...

Re: Can someone tell me what kind of catfish i have?
Agree with Silurus. Your fish is pale because it is stressed - normal reaction. Prolonged stress weakens immune system and the fish get ill and usually die, unless the stress is relived.

Re: What kind of shovelnose do I have?
I am happy you found it useful but it would not be a good idea to just rely on my thoughts. It is always nice to hear at least several sides of the story. Besides, I am no expert - I was mostly repeating what real experts say here and there. IME, TSNs are the most predatory of the large pims that I ...

Re: What kind of shovelnose do I have?
This is the most commonly sold "TSN" in the US and, apparently Canada. The white stripe will disappear with age, pretty soon. After the true pattern of stripes emerges, you may be able to tell if this is a genuine species, maybe. Some experts here believe and profess that there are no genu...

Re: The update on my synos and their situation.
I really feel for you, Maccus, but don't have enough experience/knowledge to really help you. Synos fight, people say. I have had many of them, up to about 50 different ones, including from 6 to 10 euptera (5"-9" TL) (all in a 55 gal at one point for almost a year!). When I had only 4-10 o...

If the following further muddles up the waters, then, Redfan, just forget/disregard it... When treating ich with salt, it usually takes at least a week at about 2 (or 1-3) teaspoons (5 gram each; or ~3 US lbs per 100 US gal) per US gallon and when the visible parasites disappear, another week is rec...

Re: Liosamadora Oncinus - Urgent advice required
My Jags went through a period of ~4 months refusing to eat when first introduced to the tank. Don't know why. Appeared healthy. It was a battle of wills. I caved. Tankmates ate it all. I had to start dropping food on their heads in their hidey-hole so they eat something. Then they ate hungrily. In a...

Thanks much, mate but IMO Birger is 3 leagues above mine and he has a library of books to help him in his ID endeavors and tons of experience. a 33 gallon XL (48"x12"x12") yes, that is a very good geometry for cats for a 33 gal tank. 1. they are lively, active swimmers (under proper conditions) 2. their maxillary barbels exceed their body length. So on a 6" SL fish/7"-7.5" TL fish the barbels will span more t...

As a genus, these guys are sometimes called dolphin catfish and bottle-nose catfish. As a family, they belong to the wood cafishes.

IME, if you desire visible catfish, do not use any furniture/plants or just a few thin sticks of driftwood - the cats sit in bare tanks at LFSs for long times, sometimes years. But relatively speaking, the more you will get, say going from 1-2 to 5-6 to 10-15, the more visible they will be. There ar...

IMHO, neither scenario would be sufficient for someone trying to accomplish your/your better half's goal. You will not highlight/showcase the pictus in a 33 gal with only 2 of them. They will hide all the time, most likely, and even when they come out you will have to come close and squint to see th...

I've had a loner for 2 years. Always been a sweety in my very diverse tanks of 10-30 different kinds of fish but none were smaller than him. Many were of the same size though, ~4".

The difference between S. lima and S. elongatus is quite far from trivial to ascertain... the difference in the adult size is 2 times - 2 feet vs. 1 foot, respectively. This is the most common reason people's "S. limas" never exceed 11"-12". I know you have a beautiful group of t...

6" TL (total length I presume) is not large by my standards. I've received plenty of foot-long, robust-bodied fishes before by mail. The problem is the sharp spines. I do not think it is worth your money to ship a fish that'd be ~$25 as a trade-in in an average US LFS (an LFS would give you ~$8...

One simple way is to use the "upload attachment" tab below your reply window (when you are typing up a reply). It allows you to attach 3 files of no more than 512 KB size each. This is the only way I've been using. Others involve using links, clogs, etc. as described in FAQs.

Well, certainly it is your call but I wanted to add that without at least a tentative diagnosis and other details (tanks details and tank mates), taking a fish out of its home and treating it in quarantine with (what?) meds may not be advisable, as this stresses the fish even further (just one con a...
