Re: Delonix regia seed pods - aquarium safe?

Thanks Eric and Dave. To my non-scientific mind that paper says that the mature seeds had previously been assumed to be toxic, but it seems the results of their study showed them to be edible, albeit with a cardiovascular risk due to a high sodium to potassium ratio. I think that means the pods shou...

Re: H. debilittera project

I would think that your water should be ok for them, and most loricariids.

I haven't kept Hypancistrus debilittera myself, hopefully someone who has can offer advice, but I'd say you are on the right track.

Good luck.

Delonix regia seed pods - aquarium safe?

Hi Everyone, 20+ years ago while on a family holiday to the Caribbean, Jamaica, I believe, I picked up and brought home one side of a large curved seed pod, about 16-18 inches long. While looking for something else yesterday I found it in a box and thought it'd look good in an aquarium, rather than ...

Re: H. debilittera project

Bonjour Jeanne! Welcome to PlanetCatfish. A good place top start is the species page for the fish here Hypancistrus debilittera , if you click the name of the fish it gives lots of information, including natural habitat, temperature, pH, etc. When looking to setup a species specific tank, I'll often...

Re: Error message when using species search

I get the same on my android phone, it appears in the background, behind the stuff which should be on the page.

The search does seem to work though and the error isn't there on the results page.

Re: Deciding on catfish for African river tank

Thanks for the detailed reply Rupert, I'm not really drawn to Syno's so will hopefully avoid any issues with aggression. I remember you getting those Amphilius, and briefly discussing them with you. Just shows how I lack any knowledge of African fish as I assumed they were South American! Did you ge...

Re: Deciding on catfish for African river tank

There is a very real possibility that I may need to drastically cut back on tanks and fish sometime after the current lockdown ends, as we hope to finally get on the housing ladder in the near future and realistically we won't have space for the four 4-foot+ tanks currently in use. You should get o...

Deciding on catfish for African river tank

Hi All, I really enjoy watching my Asian hill stream tank, and have decided to dedicate another tank to an African river setup. I can free up either a 3 or 4 feet long tank, both 18 inches front to back, and 12 inches tall. I'd prefer to have a group of smaller fish than 1 or 2 large fish. The fish ...

Re: Marc's fish room build

Apparently I've missed some updates here. Quick comments: I've also had fish swim through uplift tubes into the space behind Mattenfilters. For glass catfish I've jammed a slice of plastic into the tube, splitting it into two halves which are each small enough that the catfish doesn't want to go th...

Yes I had noticed the current administration, well at least the person at the top of it, don't appear to be taking conservation seriously. More of a case of its ours to make money from so why not. Hopefully any new fisheries developed out of this new opportunity, are treated with respect and well ma...

Re: RO/DI questions - Hoping to breed L-134's & L-182's

Welcome to PlanetCatfish :-). Firstly, I'd recommend starting with a 50/50 mix, I'd pre-mix it in a bucket/suitable container, then use a small pump or a hose to siphon it in, if you can position the bucket higher than the tank to refill. Then you can monitor the parameters of the tank for a couple ...

Re: Marc's fish room build

A couple videos for you all! Firstly my Asian hillstream tank, the catfish in there are Akysis portellus , they are so active when feeding, great fun to watch. They seem to have a little trouble knowing when to stop eating though, they get huge (for their size!) bellies! 8O-6z2Fr8s8 The second is of...

We'd like to see some pictures of the tanks once they are setup. Hopefully the other priorities don't take too much time away from setting up the tanks!

Re: Marc's fish room build

Over the weekend I decided to try making some tubes for my Trachelyopterichthys taeniatus , as I only have clay caves, I thought they'd appreciate some shelter which they can just swim through easily, rather than a dead end cave. We have a large oak tree (Quercus robur) in our garden, a while ago in...

Re: accompanying fish

It does depend on what you'd like to do. Keep as close to their natural habitat as possible? Then look up the tetras from the same rivers. Something easy and cheaper (given they breed like rabbits) rainbow fish would work too, but as Bas mentioned they are found several thousand miles from your catf...

Not catfish related, but thought I'd share for anyone with a similar issue. This morning I found my largest ~100mm Garra sp.
