Re: Sexual dimorphism in Anaspidoras Macrostoma...
The a. macrostoma are around 4", the parauchenoglanis about 3" Sexing the anaspidoglanis is admittedly guesswork on my part as I'm assuming the slimmer shaped one's being males, the more stout or robust being female, no science involved...

Re: perruno catfish
It was from a search weeks ago where I found reference to Rio Negro and p. perruno and at the moment can't find it again. In FishBase, checking listings of Freshwater Fishes by Country, they are listed as native to Venezuela and Colombia, for what it's worth. Without detailed maps at hand, I wrongly...

Re: perruno catfish
I've had discussions on other sites in the past about p. perruno I.D. Aside from being native to the Lake Maracaibo Basin they are also said to exist in the Rio Negro in Venezuela, Colombia and presumably, Brazil, according to FishBase. They used to infrequently show up in LFS' back n the 1970's as ...

Re: Uncommon Giraffe Catfish
I just saw the post on the new revision of the genus. I knew they were a rare find but an unnamed species, Wow! I got them from importer Toyin Ojo ('Africanman') of Rehoboth Aquatics. I raised them from 3" to around 15" or so and sold them to a scientist with large aquaria who in turn sold...

Re: Sexual dimorphism in Anaspidoras Macrostoma...
More on Parauchenoglanis I.D..... With thanks to Jippo for sending me 'A Revision of the African Genus Parauchenoglanis', after a few readings, I am now better able to attempt to identify the species in question. Of all the possible parauchenoglanis species it could be, based upon general morphology...

Thanks Jippo! After an hour or so of attempting to send you a PM you either got a dozen messages or none? Probably the latter... Something isn't working for me and not sure why? Re: Sexual dimorphism in Anaspidoras Macrostoma...
At one point I had 3 a. macrostoma in one 60G (US) tank, 1 female (the most robust) and 2 males I think. One or both beat up and killed one male. Of the remaining two, the female was attacking and nipping the fins and tail of the male. I removed the male to a community tank and it's now healed and d...

Re: Sexual dimorphism in Anaspidoras Macrostoma...
Jippo was right! The differences had nothing to do with sexual dimorphism, they're separate genus and species. I do see differences in morphology among the anaspidoglanis macrostoma and think I have 2 males and one female. I did find out that the a. macrostoma need to be kept alone as they will figh...

Re: Sexual dimorphism in Anaspidoras Macrostoma...
Very interesting comments everyone, thanks! Perhaps I overstated the 'holy grail' comment a bit, for some that would be a blue-eyed pl*co at Wal-Mart for $1.99, for me a pseudopimelodus mangurus at my LFS... I once found what I thought was a rare pseudopimelodus species in the oddball tank at the LF...

Re: Sexual dimorphism in Anaspidoras Macrostoma...
Here's 3 more pic's for comparison. If indeed they are different species then wouldn't that be something like the holy grail find in fishkeeping for those seeking the rare and obscure? In any case, these are a new and interesting species for me, very attractive and cuter than baby warthogs! a.-macro...

Re: Sexual dimorphism in Anaspidoras Macrostoma...
Oh my, I hope you're right! I've been searching for months for parauchenoglanis. What are the odds, I got 2 shipments of fish, one batch of 12 and approx half were the one variety and the other different and I kept 6, a mix of both kinds. Then I got 2 from another importer and received one of each p...

Re: Sexual dimorphism in Anaspidoras Macrostoma...
Yes I saw that, male's may be smaller and darker, a bit vague perhaps. I've seen info and diagrams of parauchenoglanis species viewed from the above that show the opposite is true as far as comparing overall head and body shape minus the color/marking differences with the more robust specimens said ...

Pleco-vertical.gif Wow! That took all of ten minutes! I went to the Cat-eLog and looked under that genus and yes, it does closely resemble some shown under p. pardalis, even though there seems to be several variations shown there... Here's another pic, a bit dark but better displaying finnage... No...

Yet another Pl*co I.D. Please..
Pleco-mouth.gif Pleco-belly.gif Pleco-side.gif I keep many catfish but pl*co's not my specialty, I think it's a hypostomus species and different than my other common variety, it was more expensive as well. Current size is 6.5", kept in my cool water tank w/t. fulvidraco's at a temp. of 72F and...

Thanks Sid for the great info on syno aggression, with little experience with them I was under the assumption they are generally a peaceful genus, obviously it depends.. Re: Doradid perhaps?
Thanks Mats, I'vd had this fish for 3 years, 7 months and it hasn't grown much, if at all in that time. I don't recall it ever showing maxillary barbels and I checked old photo's and it looked the same. I got the fish from a Peruvian importer so it wasn't an lfs trade in. It is a very shy and timid ...

Re: Synodontis LFS Find..
Hey Thanks! After reading the extensive Hybrid Syno Thread I'm glad I'm not a serious syno collector. The fish wasn't sold to me under any pretense, just a handsome syno specimen to my mind for $30. I could likely go crazy trying to figure out it's combined lineage, just guessing it looks like an oc...

Re: what tankmates for Cephalosilurus apurensis?
Since I like your fish, here's some thoughts. You could consider a length of pvc pipe, the specific type approved for domestic water use. Another possibility might be a short length of red clay sewer pipe which is very heavy duty and unglazed and available in large diameters. Any large clay pot desi...

Synodontis LFS Find..
New-Syno-.gif New-Syno.gif Found this syno today at my lfs and couldn't resist as I don't recall seeing one like it before. Upon close inspection it seems to be a female, it's 14cm (5.5 inches) TL and from looking through the cat-e-log the closest comparison seems to me to be s. rebeli. My hobby is...

Re: Doradid perhaps?
Doradid-head-bits.gif Thanks to both for your replies. It does closely resemble opsodoras steubellii in many respects but this fish lacks the longer maxillary barbels as with steubellii. It shares morphological similarities with several species among a few genus found in doradidae. Perhaps the key ...

Re: Tips and Tricks
Some clever idea's indeed! Here's a tip for those who have carbon filters and house cats. When replacing the carbon such as in cannister filters, save the used carbon and dry it in the sun for a few days. The next time you change the litter in the cat's litter box spread an inch deep layer of the us...

No, the pic isn't mine, just something in my archives from around 3 years ago I found on another site. By anecdotal I meant not scientifically verifiable. If I recall those fish were in something like a 1000 gal. tank. As far as gravel depth, my tank has at least 4" and she easily dug down to b...

Re: what tankmates for Cephalosilurus apurensis?
Viktor, I've found that with all my pseudopimelodus species that they very much enjoy a deep gravel substrate combined with large smooth pieces of African driftwood (bogwood) in a dark corner of their tank and will dig out a 'nest' or hiding spot therein. They will, every so often rearrange the drif...

Re: what tankmates for Cephalosilurus apurensis?
I would think the only clear answer might be that the gar and tsn are likely to be safe. The apurensis may or may not be depending on how agressive the other species are as far as competition for food and territory is concerned. Given a large environment such as yours and assuming all the species ar...
