Re: Breeding Leporacanthicus sp. cf galaxias L-240

Very cool. I'm just learning about the two I got last night and was encouraged to see this thread. I hope to get a few more in the future and maybe try my hand at breeding also. Any updates?

Re: Opinions on a showcase large pl*co for SA tank

So I ended up with a single L075 at about 4" and a pair of L240's (actually not a pair, but 2) which were too small yet for my big tank. The L240's were at about 2" each. And I got two 3" or so L201's just because the seller said they were easy to keep and interesting. So now I got th...

Re: Opinions on a showcase large pl*co for SA tank

I was actually thinking a pair of each. However, I was concerned with aggression from the males. Do you think it's possible, or do I have enough hiding places/space that it shouldn't matter. The only other bottom type fish I have in there are one silver tip BNP, and three L129's.

Re: Opinions on a showcase large pl*co for SA tank

The supplier just got in L075's and L240's. I am definitely getting a L075, but I am just wondering if I can also have an L240 in there?

Re: Opinions on a showcase large pl*co for SA tank

Yes, the local supplier is on our fish forum (BCAquaria.com) and supplies fish to the LFS's but also sells to forum members direct, so the prices aren't too bad. He had 6" L128's for $50, but I opted for the smaller ones (have them in a 15 gallon long growing out). Eventually they will go in th...

Re: Opinions on a showcase large pl*co for SA tank

Yes, that $125 is a private sale also. That's why I thought it was pricey. I have 3 L128's that at 2" that I got for $20 each. Currently, they're the most exotic I got. :D

Re: Opinions on a showcase large pl*co for SA tank

Been busy making kids, Mats. :D Thanks for the suggestions guys and the pointer to the search tool and results. I'm liking that Pekoltia sabaji, I'll have to call up my supplier (I don't buy my pleco's from shops anymore) and see if he can get those. As for how much they are around here, it's variab...

Re: Opinions on a showcase large pl*co for SA tank

Oh, and I forgot a key piece of info. I feed all my fishes New Life Spectrum pellets. My SA tank gets NLS large fish formula, and I also feed Zucchini to my plecos (I have L144 and small L128 along with regular BNP's in my other smaller tanks) at least once a week and occasionally, Bok Choy and othe...

Opinions on a showcase large Pleco for SA tank

It's been a while since I've posted to these forums, but my interest in catfish have been rejuvenated with the addition of a shoal of Agassisiz Corys and the removal of my Gibbiceps, so that now I have space for a new Pleco to showcase in my 125 gallon. First here is my setup: Planted 125 gallon (mo...

I'd be cautious if you had any other fish in there which are ominvores though. They'll likely see the cherries as a nice snack.

Thanks, Mats. I kinda figured that by default, when I saw the Gibbey pushing every catfish-like creature away (the redtailed shark was fighting with the Gibbey). So I've taken to putting some food in another corner for the Cory's. Unfortunatetly, it seems the Gibbey's figured it out, so now when he ...

Cool. Thanks. Yes, I've noticed that the Gibbey loves whatever veggies I stick in there. I just finished feeding a slice of yellow (sweet) pepper in there. Lettuce, zucchini and bok choy are a regular part of the diet too. However, I have never seen the bulldog eat. I suspect it's mostly subsisting ...

Mixing different sized pleco's in a large SA/CA tank

Sorry if this topic has been covered, but I searched around quite a bit and am not sure it's ever been answered. Details: 125 gallon SA/CA tank 2 Chocolate Cichlids (7" and 5") 1 Texas Cichlid (4") 1 Red Tailed Black shark (4") 4 Silver Dollars (4.5 - 5") Current catfishes: ...

I've been reading up on and here on breeding, and am considering getting a LFS to order me a pair and just breed them so I can supply them to the local hobbyist and FS's, they are that rare around here.

I think it's related to location. Here on the west coast (Vancouver), the average going price seems to be $18 for a 2 - 3" BNP. For a veiltail, you're looking at maybe $35 - $40. And in most stores, you might see one, maybe two. I ended up getting a bulldog pleco and I am happy with my purchase.

Don't use fine sand if you're going to have plants which are rooted in substrate. If you want to go economy, line the bottom of the tank with a small amount of peat (single very thin layer not covering the bottom entirely, then add some laterite, maybe a cup full and then cover with gravel. If you w...

Are BNP's "rare"?

I was just wondering. I have been to LFS's looking for BNP or two for my 125 gallon SA Cichlid tank. I have a 4 inch Gibbey in there now, but he's not doing much with the algae in there. I saw an albino BNP this weekend at a LFS and they want $29 for a 1.5 inch fish! I got my Gibbey for $8. I can un...

I found cukes to be very messy. They disintegrated in the water after about 12 hours. Zucchini seem to be more stable.

My Gibbey seems to like all vegetables raw. I've fed him/her peeled asparagus, and even sweet red peppers. Every was eaten heartily. Raw asparagus is good in that it keeps well in the water.

Is he/she a common?

I got this little guy at just over an inch and half, and now he is about 2.5 inches. He was sold as a "leopard pleco". He doesn't look like a common to me. Is he? Sorry for the dark pic, but I caught a rare shot of him as he munched on some Bok Choy. http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f304/...

I would actually have left all the internal filters running along with the new one, and then pull one and then the other out. The old filters will get bacteria colonized in the new filter quickly.
