Re: Possible Panaque maccus?

Here are some good photos taken by Liz. A close-up of the mouth: http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/16/49/72/83/l14710.jpg An approximately 2.5 cm tail extension in the shape of a banner: http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/16/49/72/83/l147_t11.jpg There is no image in the Cat-eLog showing this extension. Re: Possible Panaque maccus?

Well, we went to see the fish today and my friend (LizB, above) took him for her 150 gallon tank. In person, this pleco was much bigger than the photos showed; it is full size. There seem to be no male characteristics, as described in the cat-eLog, so we are assuming this fish is female. Let us know...

Re: Possible Panaque maccus?

It certainly does! (*)

One more thing - would you say this is a mature specimen? To me, it has a slightly juvenile look. Based on the photo, and accounting for scale, I put it at just over 4"; about 4.25" TL or almost 11 cm.

Re: Possible Panaque maccus?

Oh! That adds a new twist to this discussion. Martin had a feeling it might be P. sabaji, too. L147 could be - the owner says his fish has "yellow bands" on the dorsal and caudal fins. No other coloration (like spots) is mentioned. It's a bit of a problem because I can't see the fish for m...

Re: Possible Panaque maccus?

Well, the mystery is solved. Although I have never seen this fish myself, the owner has compared it to photos of similar fish and has decided the correct ID is Panaque changae.
Thanks again for all the help! (*)

Re: Possible Panaque maccus?

Thanks for the replies, so far. Will check out those suggestions. Martin, I agree that different photos are needed. ;) I've asked the guy to try for a close up of the face and a ventral view. Will post as soon as these are available. (As to the photo taken out of water, he was moving the fish to a d...

Possible Panaque maccus?

Hello. A guy in my local club owns this fish. He saw some pix of my Panaque maccus tank and offered to give me his "clown pleco." From his description of the fish, though, I'm not sure if it is P. maccus and was hoping for some help. This is the best pic he sent me. We are working on more....

Posterior processes of the coracoids.

10G13581FRM coracoids.jpg Unfortunately, one of my little Hara jerdoni died recently from unknown causes. (I suspect live blackworms, but can't prove it.) Anyway, I removed his little corpse from the aquarium and realized that if it was left to dry, I would get to see the skeleton. Here is the disc...

Shane, it looks great! And considering the temps these days, keeping the pond in the 80's is pretty good. :-BD Please post if and when any turtles show up. Bulldog plecos fighting! (C. milesi)

Last weekend I picked up these two Chaetostoma milesi, L-187a, from a local shop owner who is just starting to bring some interesting catfish into his shop. The bigger one is about 7.5 cm and the little one is about 6.0 cm. During acclimation, a bit of a ruckus broke out! http://i76.photobucket.com/...

I simply didn't have a place for them in one of my already operating tanks. Even though the specimens in t...

Hi. This is a follow-up to my October post. On October 24, 2011, I posted that I had heard from a contact in the trade that he might have some driftwood catfish coming available at the end of the month. At the end of October he told me he had access to the following species: Tatia brunnea is availab...

Re: Labeled as gold spot Ancistrus.

There are three causes of the bloated belly: eggs (gravid), intestinal blockage, or internal bacterial infection. Generally, with an infection, the fish will be acting pretty sickly (stationary, out in the open, heavy breathing). Thanks. This is what I thought, too. I'll ask the owners some specifi...

... How big is it (I don't have any dollar bills to had to compare with)? Looks a bit small to be gravid. Is it acting otherwise normally? Sorry, I mentioned in the previous posts that the size of the bill was about 6" or 15.5 cm and the owners say the fish is just on 5". That would be ju...

That fish looks like its going to explode. I know. Not sure why, though. The next photo shows the fish in a flowerpot. Chubby + entering cave = ? Good sign? or sign of illness? Here is a photo with the flash: http://i42.servimg.com/u/f42/17/22/45/66/dsc01710.jpg Still hoping for positive ID.

Re: Labeled as gold spot Ancistrus.

Thanks! It's not my fish - I'm helping out. My first thought was L107, too, but I asked the owners to describe it carefully, just in case it was not an Ancistrus. I wondered if it could be Hypancistrus L201. L240 is a distinct possibility. I've since heard that the fish has no bristles and is very d...
