Re: Quick answer needed for an imminent pleco purchase: Guahiborum, gold nugget, or Panaqolus?

Thanks for the perspectives, Clay and Johannes. I'm still undecided what I will do. What I'm not hearing you (or anyone else) is that I misunderstand the requirements of keeping gold nuggets - they do get big and they are a bit difficult to care for. At this time, I don't have the motivation to set ...

Re: Treating monogenean parasites by immersion in ginger extract.

Sorry if misplaced. I posted the paper because inside the paper, the authors refer to treating Clarias gariepinus with ginger successfully (even though catfish aren't the subjects on this paper), and because one of the few areas of fishkeeping which still seems to me to be a bit of magic, prayer, an...

Re: Opinions about stirring sand or gravel during weekly water changes?

I like " belt and braces ", it avoids a single point of failure. Actually, I think you taught me that, in my thread about deep gravel. ;-) I'm not sure they will be that toxic, unless you have a lot of organic matter in your substrate the gases produced will be nitrogen (N2) and CO2, rath...

Re: Opinions about stirring sand or gravel during weekly water changes?

My view these days is that it's like algae. It's something natural that happens. When you wander around in bodies of water in the wild, you disturb lots of gas from the bottom of slow flowing or still waters. Nowadays I don't actively try to disturb it in tanks with deeper sand But I would think th...

Quick answer needed for an imminent pleco purchase: Guahiborum, gold nugget, or Panaqolus?

Okay, so for a while now I've been looking forward to buying a group of 4-6 spotted orange seam plecos ( Hemiancistrus guahiborum ) from my LFS. These fish were suppose to go into a 20 Gal tank with six Centromochlus perugiae . You can read about those plans (more like ruminations) here: What is a g...

And yes they all look alike haha I've had hints that they are temminckii, snowflake, Cr.cirrhosis. Temminckii and snowflake... Congratulations. At least with those two, you managed to find some which DON'T look alike! Nice choices. So what do you think these fish are? What are people on other sites...

Re: Opinions about stirring sand or gravel during weekly water changes?

The problem with clogging the intake side of any "pump" is it can cause damage. One should always control flow on the output side unless you have a variable speed control that is a part of the pump or powerhead.... If you use pre-filters, it is very important to rinse them regularly to pr...

Re: Opinions about stirring sand or gravel during weekly water changes?

The problem for me would tend to be " out of sight, out of mind ", once the gunk was inside the filter. If you are in a situation where your dissolved oxygen levels are already sub-optimal even a short period of low flow may tip the tank, and its inhabitants, over the edge. Oxygenation is...

Enhancement idea: Can a genus description narrative be added to the genus page in the CLOGs?

Hi Jools, As a (relatively) new catfish keeper, I sometimes struggle to know what distinguishes one genus from another. In other words, why will one pleco (for example) be considered a member of genus X and not genus Y? Okay, forget the scientist in me for a moment - I know that taxonomists have wor...

Hi @jac, Okay, thanks. So your largest juvies are about 2cm (SL or TL?). What is the SL of your adults? How long were they when they spawned? Even the smallest of my six are mature enough to show sexually-dimorphic anal fins (I definitely have some small males); I would estimate that these same indi...

Re: Plecos dying! :-(

Tilting pleco caves to be higher at the opening prevents the possibility of trapping gas in a cave as well as helping to keep eggs from rolling out . Independent of everything else, this is great advice all on its own. As well as doing what the other posters have suggested I would add a power-head ...

Re: Opinions about stirring sand or gravel during weekly water changes?

When one has a deeper unplanted substrate, the possibility for developing anaerobic bacteria which produce hydrogen sulfide increases. There with these the idea is not to stir things up below 1/2 inch down and one should be fine. So this gets to half of my question: If you DO have sand or gravel wh...

Opinions about stirring sand or gravel during weekly water changes?

Hi All, Following on the tail of another thread ( Plecos dying! :-( ), I have a question about your opinions on what you consider good practice, or even best practice, when it comes to keeping gravel and sand clean in an aquarium. Myself, my views have evolved in the year that I've been on this site...

Re: Plecos dying! :-(

One more thought about the gas and its potential risks: Caves and other such furniture may trap these gases when they are released in an aquarium. In one of the instances I was referring to in my tanks, I had a 1/2 coconut shell, buried partially in the sand as a cave for an Apistogramma agassizii ....

I don't know if SeaChem Prime (http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/Prime.html) is especially better than other chemicals. In the US, I've been told that this is a particularly good chlorine/chloramine/ammonia-removing mixture, good because it's concentrated and so you add very little of it...

Perfect - Smart solution for the @mentions function to cross spaces. No rush. Hi Johannes, Sorry to hear that. At least one shop has the Peckoltia vittata, but what if this is really a vittata and not a P. Maccus? I really like them, but they are larger then the P. Maccus and probably too large for a group in a 60cm aquarium. If I were buying these, I wouldn't be too concerned about the size difference. Acc...
