Re: cholla wood in L397 tank
I think it's a good thing you haven't invested in cholla wood, because it looks like my P. maccus are totally not interested in it. May I offer a precautionary note - This has arisen in several recent threads: Some plecos don't recognize new food choices as "food" the first or even the se...

Directly? I would not expect so. The Philometroides which I looked up use copepods as intermediate hosts in their life cycle. I don't believe there is any ability to transmit from fish to fish directly.

Re: What's this worm?
At least at a preliminary level, I would agree with you; otherwise, I don't know more about these parasites to be more helpful. From your photos and description I could tell it was a nematode, I just couldn't tell what KIND of nematode it was. And like the Mayo Clinic says about humans, in the fish ...

-- reside coiled-up tightly, ~3/16" coil diameter, deep within the fish flesh, in pure muscle, There are lots of worms that encyst in flesh, but this reminds me of trichinosis, which is caused by a type of roundworm. (EDIT: I'm not saying it IS trichinosis, I'm just saying that the parasite, i...

Re: Mixing orange lasers and leopards?
In my experience, if you keep multiples of mixed sexes of each species together, corys tend to spawn with their own kind instead of with each other. But this is not a hard-and-fast rule. You might want to read this thread: hybridization b/w elegans group species . In there you'll find a running list...

Re: Home-made pleco spawning caves
Thanks Teresa, Yes others (e.g., @Mol_PMB) have also used and recommended the drilled out oak branches for spawning caves. I like the idea but so far I haven't tried that; my tanks are mostly small (20 gallons or less), so my pieces of wood are likewise pretty small and narrow, not really suitable f...

Re: Frozen vegetables for clown plecos?
I tried the Brussels sprouts yesterday... however the albomaculatus haven't yet touched it. If anything, the albomaculatus seem more interested in the bamboo skewer than the sprout. #-O I guess I spoke too soon. When I went to bed last night, there was a big chunk missing, and when I awoke today, t...

Thanks, I am too. Regarding my first batch of eggs, my hatching tank is so densely filled with Java moss that I can't see any of the little babies any more. On the upside, I've found only one dead fry, so I hope the others are just hiding well. You're talking about getting some too, right? Good luck...

She looks gravid to me also. I agree with Silurus. If you have such a nice sized group and only one is this big, you probably have some males too. Have you considered trying to spawn them? There is information on the species description page ("CLOG" page) here: Synodontis nigriventris , an...

Re: Frozen vegetables for clown plecos?
I tried the Brussels sprouts yesterday, one each (prepared as described elsewhere - boiled 10 minutes then impaled on a bamboo skewer) with my ABNs and with my Panaqolus albomaculatus (oddly, I did not try sprouts with my clown plecos... Don't know why, but not on purpose). The ABNs are actively wor...

Thanks for the well-wishes. Fertilization is not a pretty scene in nature. If you've ever seen ducks mate, you'll soon wish you hadn't :YMSICK: Indeed. Have you ever been to a Grateful Dead concert? Very similar. And yes, some fish are quite aggressive when spawning. So even though this does appear ...

Re: HMF Questions
In regards to the "slow flow" principle, make sure you don't compromise oxygenation of the water in the fish-side of the tank. I believe that's what TTA was referring to when he mentioned how to use the power head.

Centromochlus perugiae: Is this fighting or insemination?
Hi all, For the second time in a week, I've found a male and female oil cat engaged in a repetitive circling behavior, and I can't tell whether this is an aggressive interaction or a spawning event where the male is attempting to inseminate the female. Since these oil cats are the only Auchenipterid...

Re: Home-made pleco spawning caves
UPDATE: On the advice of the artist, I tried pre-drying my one remaining salted piece (the rock with two caves) by baking it in my oven for a few hours, slowly increasing the heat from 100F-150-200-250F, then I let the cave cool down within the oven. After that, I placed it in my barbeque and fired ...

Have you read this thread? Opinions about stirring sand or gravel during weekly water changes? Towards the middle and end, there is discussion of buying and setting up HMFs. Re: C.perugaie with P.compta?
The only plant I have in the tank is Brazilian pennywort. It forms lily pad-like leaves and it grows up to the water surface (and out of it, which is cool). It forms a big tangled mat just below the water surface... Not a floating plant per se (like duckweed), but the same effect. I've got golden te...

Re: Ancistrus dying
Hi Farooq, I have one more thought about your early fish deaths. Your fish were pretty small when you bought them. The ones which died may have been of questionable health when you got them. When I started with my Ancistrus, they were about as big as yours. I bought 5 and 3 died. I replaced those wi...

Re: I need advise, PLEASE!
I can tell you that I've kept trilineatus together with aeneus for four years now, and so far no interspecific hybrids. The advice I've read is that you are less likely to get hybrids if you keep several of each species in the tank. That way, if they try to breed, it will likely be with their own ki...
