Re: can silicone caulk be unsafe?

with a little help from my friends, we will hopefully get to the picture-taking stage ... even if these will be about my basement flooded with 2500 gal of premium-cleanliness fish-tank water and a few big pretty cats hiding under the forced-air heating furnace and water heater ...

Re: can silicone caulk be unsafe?

To Amanda: Thank you! To Mats: Thank you for the tip about the barcodes, Mats -- why is not anything easy? Oh, yeah, right, right... I keep forgetting that it's a fallen world :( . The reason I said what I said about GE silicone is that even within one home improvement store there are differing kind...

Re: can silicone caulk be unsafe?

ok. I have just gone to the LFS and got two tubes of Marineland 100% clear silicone rubber, fish safe, meant for aquariums, handles water column pressure. Sure it is 2-3 times more expensive, $12 for a standard caulk-gun sized tube 304 ml or 10.3 US fluid oz, but if I knew it from the get go, I woul...

Re: can silicone caulk be unsafe?

Okay. Can it be that there exist different types of GE Silicone One, made for pet shops and for hardware stores? And can my mistake be that I went to the home improvement/hardware store (Lowe's) to get theirs? Here is a small piece from e-how: http://www.ehow.com/facts_5892414_kind-silicone-can-use-...

Re: can silicone caulk be unsafe?

Mats, the wording on the tube of GE Silicone I (one) is slightly different from that on GE Silicone II (two) but still unsettling. The last sentence of the instructions reads: "Not for use below the water line or aquariums." Do you think this can be disregarded? Do you still assert that Si...

Ha-ha!!! I will never make Sherlock Holmes. Thank you Bas Pels!! I should have guessed your attempt to help me resolve my lack of understanding. I thought "ichli" refers to some character, perhaps greek. :D Why are some words edited? This one does not appear to be a bad or dirty word?

Re: alternative filter media

Birger, as you hinted these two compounds are very, very diferent - one is an organic polymer and the other is a very highly insoluble inorganic salt - rock dust. Hard to combine them indeed, but not at all impossible: say, one can melt the polymer and mix the melt with the CaCO3 salt powder and the...

2wheelsx2, sorry to be so dense but I still do not get what this forum or website is - it appears you either assume I know it or I should be able to guess easily. Neither do I understand Bas Pels' mysterious comment. No need to explain if you'd rather not.

Re: Large tank reseal ideas?????

Yes, Mats, you are correct. After I had written my prior comment, I thought about it and realized that I just did not think vodka could be almost pure ethanol. Vodka in my apparently skewed belarussian mind has always been associated with 40% by volume. So when you wrote that absolute vodka is 96% b...

Birger, you may be right but just for giggles, let me point out that people that want to sell you stuff may package the deal differently. See, for example: http://www.pondliner.com/product/savio_springflo_filter_media/filter_media it says: """"Savio Springflo Bio Filter Media's p...

Re: can silicone caulk be unsafe?

to Mats: thank you! ok, so the conclusion is next time I will use GE Silicone I (one). But: (1) can I use what I've made with Silicone II (two)? (2) If not, why not? will the anti-mold agent kill beneficial bacteria or will something leech out of the caulk and affect my fish's health or something e...

Re: alternative filter media

To Mats: although 2wheelsx2's comments are right on the mark, I appreciate your edifying response!! Your concerns with polymer/plastic chemistry and composition ring true to my ear. The softening compounds are called plastisizers. It is never just one organic chemical. A plastisizer is a cocktail o...

Re: Large tank reseal ideas?????

Mats: 2. You rub it with Vodka, which is almost pure alcohol anyways ["Absolut" vodka is distilled to 96%, which is as pure as you CAN distill ethanol in presence of water]. Viktor: a likely small correction: 96% is close to 50 volume %; 100 volume % would be 200% or 200 proof, so absolut ...

can silicone caulk be unsafe?

For my 2500 gal indoor pond (in my basement), I've been putting together an alternative filter using a regular 96-gal gardage toter (from Lowes home improvement store). The plumbing guy at the store appeared quite experienced and taught me how to put in inlets and outlets in the toter cheaply, safel...

Thanks Mats! Ok, I've just bought 100 US gal worth of pot scrubbers (red, blue, yellow, orange, green, and purple) for a huge filter I am rigging out of a garbage toter (to service 2500 gal indoor pond in my basement). They came 6 per package with very, very little info on the package from our local...

Re: alternative filter media

Gents, Ladies, A couple of questions for seasoned collegues. Any general and especially kitchen cleaning supplies like sponges, scrubbers, scourers, etc. ARE often treated with or coated with or contain imbedded bactericidal chemicals. Richard B. was the first to suggest that in the original post "whats my cat?" Jools agrees: see email thread: Hi Viktor, The point I think is that S. galinae isn't itself genuine and is a marketed form of S. eupterus. No idea if it is a hybrid or just selective breeding, but I think it sho...

Forgot to mention, the bigger galinae (?) has a somewhat deformed, assymetric head and mouth - birth trauma, injury, or something. Of course, I do not know, I got him only a month ago from a private owner.
