Re: Driftwood from Alabama River
Lol. Indeed, bamboo stinks as it soaks, but it's so good as a spawning cave or hiding place. The worst wood I ever tried was an old grape vine ( https://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=299723#p299723). It developed a horribly smelly thick slime. I was hoping the L397 might eat the slime,...

It appears that all the eggs fungused.
Hopefully the adults spawn again soon, this time releasing fresh eggs.

Re: New Creteuchiloglanis
For a fleeting moment, I thought I had the Norgum River solved, but no. I found two publications about invertebrates, each collected along the Norgum river below a specific village. In one case, the Dengzi Village. In the other case, the Betchilling Village. Combining those two references with the C...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Rio Ucayali spawned. :-)
Second clutch of eggs hatched and the previous group of fry are doing good. Not surprising, but somehow there are a few of the older fry loose in the tank too. Either dad let a few get away from him, or else a few managed to escape the German breeder ring.

Re: New Creteuchiloglanis
As I added this new species to the CLOG and endeavored to create a (hopefully) accurate river system to near its location, I noticed a minor discrepancy in the type locality as presented in the paper. I think it's probably insignificant since most GIS data have a margin of error, but I'm not totally...

For the first time in a long time, we have another spawn of the Microglanis aff_poecilus . This time though, it's my first spawn from the Rio Nanay population (all previous spawns, in none of which the eggs developed, were from my Rio Blanco population. Most of the new eggs today look bad, which is ...

Hi Jools, Today I tried to rename Platydoras cf_birindelli to Centrochir cf_birindellii . There are currently two problems with this name. the specific epithet is spelled incorrectly (it needs the double "i") the real species ( P. birindellii ) has been reassigned to a different genus, Cen...

Re: Sexing L476 and L397?
The dorsal view of your L397 does appear to have small odontodes, so it might be male. 9cm is plenty large to show sexual traits.

Re: Sexing L476 and L397?
The only L397 shown looks female to me, but if it's immaturethen could be male. My inclinations on the Hemiancistrus are all female based on pectoral odontodes alone. Which L476 is supposed to be the male? The small one? I do see the head shadow differences... again, maybe the smaller individuals ar...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Rio Ucayali spawned. :-)
I was starting to give up hope on these Ancistrus sp`Rio_Ucayali` , but they are really tough fish! Since I moved the Rio Ucayali out to the greenhouse in late 2022, I've had maybe 3-4 spawns (March 2023 ( HERE ), 01 June 2023, 22 June 2023 and late August 2023). None of the March fry in the greenho...

Auchenipterichthys coracoideus fry, moments after hatching. The curly white lines around it are live microworms.

While still technically a loricariid, these aren't plecos: Try any of the otos (whether Otocinclus proper or others in the subfamily Hypoptopominae like Hypoptopoma ) or a whiptail catfish ( Rineloricaria , Sturisomatichthys , Sturisoma , Farlowella ). Not too hard to breed, but not as easy as bronz...

This morning I collected 31 more good eggs out of the tank, and removed about 8 bad eggs from the eggs I collected last night. Also, here's a bad pic of a few of the fry from the January 18th spawn. In total, from the first three spawns this year, I think I have about 250 (+/-50) fry growing out. I'...

Species search not yielding results with geographic designations
Hi Jools, When I use the species search, I'm getting few or no results. For example, if I just search for family Pseudopimelodidae with no other settings, the search results yield only 3 hits - 2 Batrochoglanis and one Microglanis. When I search using a water body, I get zero results every time. Als...

Re: Breeding corydoras
Do you have any plants in the tank? That might help tigger them. In my experience, aeneus really likes broad leaf plants, although aeneus would also lay some eggs on glass and on other random surfaces. If they are trying to do the T-position action, then they may already be laying eggs, but eating t...
