sold as L136b, but i think L201?

Post by DutchFry »

hi there, i'm here again :?

saturday i bought a new pl*co, it was sold to me as L136b, but i had my doubts from the beginning. i could see it was a Hypancistrus species, very hairy too, but the exact species? i think it's L201, but another topic on this board got me confused. so is this one L201?

i know it's a male, and a nice one too, but the exact species?

thanks in advance!

PS: i'm trying to add this one to the my cats page, assuming it is L201, but i get this: "not a valid user" what's up with that :?:

I'm not sure what would be wrong there, I'd suggest starting a different thread - if it turns out that it's "easy to solve", we can always close by moving it to "resolved".

ok, i will start a new thread.

i just read this one: http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/view ... 17&t=22084

but in this case, i can view 'my cats' next to the forum postings, but i can't add the species from the cat-e-log page. so this is the opposite of the problem in the thread above.

Is there a difference between L201's with gold spots vs. white spots? Or perhaps only regional variation?
I see this fish has gold spots but I have a group of 8 F1's with white spots.

I have seen specimens of H. contradens with white and gold spots on the same fish, so I would doubt they are indicative of different sp.

Just chromatic variation....

excellent, thank you!

So among hypans, the only bigg(er) spotted fish are the L201, L102, L136c, and "big white spot hypancistus (from http://www.exoticfinds.net)"

P.S. - anyone else think that the 136c in the catelog looks like a scobiancistrus (L368-ish)? Check it out:
L136c: http://planetcatfish.com/catelog/image. ... ge_id=6528
L368: http://planetcatfish.com/catelog/image. ... ge_id=2777

Sorry for the hijack of sorts

The identity of this fish is interesting, and i've been chatting to Larry (apistomaster) about it.

Is it just a nicely marked variety of H. contradens?, or as Larry (and exoticfinds) suspects, something new. It appears to be a fair bit bigger than the average H. contradens.

I suppose without knowing where it came from this is just speculation, although I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't even a Hypancistrus, and was something like a .

Oh, the fish is a hypancistrus alright, although it has a markedly different head shape and body structure from contradens. I recall hypancistrus "rio venturi" being thrown around as an ID last time this fish was brought up.

I have one of these Hypancistrus "big spot" plecos that I received in a batch of L201 for the store. It's definitely Hypancistrus and not growing all that fast. I will try to get pictures of the one here. I wasn't positive it wasn't just an extremely nicely marked H. contradens, so it will be interesting to find out.
