Unknown unusual pleco?

Post by Warmouth233 »

While strolling my LFS I came across this cute little guy. The owner told me he came in with a shipment of orange seam pleco and didn’t know what it was. Never having seen a pleco of this shape and color I brought him home. I’ve searched all over the cat-e-log but haven’t found the species but he might be a parotocinclus spp.. He seem happy in my high flow 75 gallon pleco tank. He seems to prefer the wood I have vs the rocks and is definitely very herbivorous. Any information would be greatly appreciated

Are all those photos of the same single fish? From the side view (and especially the fin color patterns), I was going to say it looks like a Panaque to me, perhaps . But the body is so narrow, I seriously think that now. Not sure what it is.

The narrow body says to me it's in the Hypoptopomatinae. Oddly, the first photo that caught my eye as similar is but even that's not a good match. But that seems to be a rare species so I doubt that's it. Your idea that might work seem close too, but I don't see any photos that match this fish.

Cheers, Eric

Party-people, thats a juvenile Cochliodon sp. “L 229“, or Hypostomus sp. “L 229“ if you want, but nothing else.

Juvies of Cochliodon are more slender, and elongated than adults, but the oral disc is already indicating towards this genus. As does the colouration and pattern tell the species.

And that's why we still need the big guns. ;-)

I stared at that thing considering and also (but didn't mention it). But I never imagined a Hypostomus type would be so skinny.

Thanks @Acanthicus.
