Identify Ancistrus species
Hello, I recently bought a couple of ancistrus, can you confirm the species for me please?
I thought about Ancistrus cf. cirrhosus. They measure approximately 12cm (4.7").

Re: Identify Ancistrus species
They do resemble A. cf. cirrhosus, but there are a number of species that look similar. Do you know if these are captive bred or wild caught?

I got them from an individual who bought them himself in a pet store (I don't know if they are wild or not). What photos would you need to determine the species?

Re: Identify Ancistrus species
Hi
I don't see why this should not be considered a common Ancistrus sp. (cf. or aff. cirrhosus). There is nothing I can spot on the photos which would lead me towards another ID.

Re: Identify Ancistrus species
No, not piebald. Normal.
"cf." is interpreted as "conferred as." It means that although we believe a fish is not a perfect match to a known species, we expect it is the same species.
"aff." is interpreted as "affinity to," meaning there is a definite similarity between a fish and a known species, but we still believe it is probably not the same species.
I may be off slightly as I paraphrase these, but I think it's generally accurate.
